Abstract:
An ultrasonic sensor (10) that transmits probe waves at prescribed transmission opportunities and comprises: a transmission unit (14) that has a piezoelectric element and that resonates as a result of power being supplied to the piezoelectric element and thereby transmits probe waves; a transmission circuit (13) that supplies power to the piezoelectric element; and a transmission control unit (12) that, at a first transmission opportunity, drives the transmission circuit so as to cause probe waves to be transmitted from the transmission unit and, after a prescribed period of time has passed from the beginning of the transmission of the probe waves, alters transmission characteristics that include at least phase, frequency, period, and/or amplitude and drives the transmission circuit. When altering the transmission characteristics, the transmission control unit provides an off period during which supply of power from the transmission circuit to the piezoelectric element is suspended.
