An ultraviolet absorber which comprises an amidated guanidine derivative represented by the following general formula (I): (I) or a salt thereof. It has excellent solubility. The ultraviolet absorber can be incorporated into various cosmetic preparations and is satisfactorily adsorbed onto the skin and hair.
