Abstract:
[Problem] To inhibit a reduction in polarization performance caused by the photocatalytic action of a grid material, in an absorptive grid polarization element capable of exhibiting sufficient polarization performance with respect to light in the ultraviolet region. [Solution] Each of a plurality of linear parts (3) forming a banded grid (2) provided on a transparent substrate (1) is provided with: a first layer (31) formed from a first material which absorbs light of a first wavelength to be absorbed; a second layer (32) formed from a second material which absorbs light of a second wavelength to be absorbed; and a third layer (33) which is provided between the first layer (31) and the second layer (32). The first material is a material which exhibits photocatalytic action, such as titanium oxide. The second material is an oxidizable material such as silicon. The third layers (33) are barrier layers formed from silicon oxide. Oxidization of the second layers (32) is inhibited by the barrier layers (33), even in cases when oxidizing active species such as ozone and atomic oxygen are generated during ultraviolet irradiation.
