An updating device 1 that updates software for virtual machines that have a cluster structure and comprises: a control unit 12 that controls a first virtual machine 50-1 of a running reserve system and a second virtual machine 50-1' that has undergone a software update; and a setting unit 11 that sets an image file 30 that includes updated software to be used to start the second virtual machine 50-1'. The control unit 12 uses the image file 30 to start the second virtual machine 50-1', sets a floating IP address 84 that has been set to the first virtual machine 50-1 to the second virtual machine 50-1', converts the second virtual machine 50-1' to a virtual machine 50-1' of the reserve system, and deletes the setting of the floating IP address 84 to the first virtual machine 50-1.
