TECHNICAL FIELD

The present disclosure relates generally to devices using liquid inhalable precursors. More specifically, and without limitation, the present disclosure relates to devices for vaping and methods of manufacturing such devices, including a plastic oil cup atomizer.

BACKGROUND

E-vaping devices, also referred to herein as vaping devices (EVDs), may be used for portable vaping. An e-vaping device may vaporize a pre-vapor formulation, such as an oil that may or may not contain one or more cannabinoids, to form a vapor. The e-vaping device may include a reservoir that holds a pre-vapor formulation and a heating element that vaporizes the pre-vapor formulation by applying heat to at least a portion of the prevapor formulation. E-vaping devices are often sold and shipped directly to local oil manufacturers, and then filled with a pre-vapor formulation, and capped by the local oil manufacturers.

The atomizer is an important part of an electronic cigarette. The structure of the existing atomizers is complicated, which will increase the volume of the electronic cigarette and cause inconvenience to carry. The heating core pin electrodes of the existing atomizers are squeezed tightly with silicone, which can lead to a poor contact effect, unstable resistance, and may be easy short circuit. The oil cups of the existing atomizers do not have a reinforcing structure and are prone to cracking during filling.

One drawback EVDs is that they may be susceptible to leaking after they are filled with a pre-vapor formulation. There is a need for improved design of an EVD that has a tank with improved structural integrity that is less susceptible to leaking and is easy to manufacture.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The present disclosure relates generally to a system and device for vaping. As used herein, “proximal” refers to a portion of the system or device that is closer to the user’s mouth when the vaping device is in use and “distal” refers to a portion of the system or device that is farther from the user’s mouth when the vaping device is used. For example, the systems and methods herein may have a mouthpiece connectable to a proximal end of a tank, and a base connectable to a distal end of a tank.

Referring to FIGs. 1-2, a vaping system 10 may generally include: a cartridge tank 15 or body with an interior reservoir that can be filled with oil for vaping; a cartridge base 19 for attachment to a distal end of the tank 15, which may hold an atomizer housing 24 that includes an atomizer or heating element for heating oil to create vapor; and a mouthpiece 30 for attachment to a proximal end of the tank 15. The base 19 may include a means for connection to a battery to provide power to the heating element (shown, by way of example, as threaded distal projection 33 in FIG. 1).

The atomizer housing 24 includes a base 35, with an outwardly extending flange 38. Also shown in FIG. 2 are the holes 42 in the atomizer housing 24 which allow prevapor formulation from the reservoir of the tank 15 to enter the atomizer housing 24, contact one or more heating elements, and be heated into vapor. As the oil vaporizes, it travels upward through the lumen of the central post 46 of the atomizer housing 24 to the mouthpiece 30 for a user to inhale.

In some configurations, the tank 15 is formed of a unitary body. In other words, the features of the tank 15 are molded from a single piece of material. This allows various features and functionalities of the tank 15 to be added without requiring any additional manufacturing steps. The tank 15 may be formed of any suitable material. In one example, the tank 15 is formed of a polyresin that is heat-resistant and will not break down at raised temperatures. In other configurations, the tank 15 is formed of heat- resistant plastics, polyresins, and blends thereof.

With reference to FIGs. 3-4, the tank 15 generally includes a main body portion 50 and a distal base portion 55. A tank wall 58 extends from an inner edge 62 to an outer edge 64. The outer edge 64 of the tank wall 58 extends from the proximal end 68 of the tank 15 to a distal end 70 of the tank 15. The inner edge 62 of the tank wall is formed of two portions: the main body inner edge 62a and the distal base portion inner edge 62b. The main body inner edge 62a extends from the proximal end 68 of the main body to the proximal end 74 of the distal base portion 55. The distal base portion inner edge 62b extends from the proximal end 74 of the distal base portion 55 to the distal end 70 of the tank 15.

An inwardly extending shoulder 77 is formed at the proximal end 74 of the distal base portion 55. The shoulder 77 extends from the main body inner edge 62a to the distal base portion inner edge, 62b. The shoulder 77 thus connects the main body inner edge 62a to the distal base portion inner edge 62b. The inwardly extending shoulder 77 can have a variety of widths. The inwardly extending shoulder 77 can extend more inwardly or less inwardly as desired to vary the width of the shoulder 77. The shoulder 77 can allow the outwardly extending flange 38 of the atomizer housing 24 to interface the tank 15. The shoulder 77 can abut the outwardly extending flange 38 when the atomizer is in place within the tank 15.

The inwardly extending shoulder 77 provides a surface for the tank 15 to interface with the outwardly extending flange 38 of the distal base of the atomizer housing 24. In some examples, no gasket is required between the outwardly extending flange 38 and the inwardly extending shoulder 77 of the distal base portion 55 of the tank 15. Because the fit between the outwardly extending flange 38 of atomizer housing and the inwardly extending shoulder 77 of the distal base portion of the tank 15 is relatively tight, no gasket is needed between the two elements of the vaping device and leak-proof assembly is achieved without a gasket. In some examples a gasket between these two portions is specifically excluded. In other examples a gasket may be used.

In some examples, the distal end 70 of the distal base portion 55 comprises one or more components that allow the distal end 70 to nestle or interface closely with the base 19 of the vaping device. For example, the base 19 of the vaping device can comprise an inner shelf 95 and outer shelf 99, with a chamfered portion 97 extending between the inner shelf 95 and the outer shelf 99. The distal end 70 of the distal base portion 55 can include one or more components to closely interface with the inner shelf 95, outer shelf 99, and the chamfered portion 97.

An exemplary distal end 70 of distal base portion 55 is shown in FIG. 5. An inner, horizontal shelf 80 can be positioned toward the inner edge 62b. The inner, horizontal shelf 80 can extend from the inner edge 62b towards the outer edge 64. The inner, horizontal shelf 80 can have different widths as desired. It can be narrowed or wider as needed. Inner, horizontal shelf 80 of the tank 15 can interface with the inner shelf 95 of the base 19 of the vaping device as shown in FIGs. 6-7.

Some exemplary configurations include a cut-away in the distal end 70, the cutaway forming a circular groove 84 in the distal end 70. The groove 84 can be positioned more inwardly or more outwardly as desired. In other configurations, a groove 84 is not provided. In examples that include a groove 84, the groove 84 can improve the fit between the distal end 70 of the tank 15 and the base 19 of the vaping device. The groove 84 can also provide a fit that eliminates the need for a gasket between the distal end 70 of the tank 15 and the base 19 of the vaping device. In some configurations, a gasket between the distal end 70 of the tank 15 and the base 19 is specifically excluded. Excluding the gasket can simplify manufacturing and also lower costs. In other examples a gasket can be used.

In some examples, another element that can be provided in the distal end of the tank to interface with the base 19 of the vaping device 10 is an outer, horizontal shelf 83. The outer, horizontal shelf 83 can be positioned towards the outer edge 64. For example, the outer, horizontal shelf 83 can extend from the outside edge 64 towards the inside edge 62a. Similar to the inner, horizontal shelf 80, the outer, horizontal shelf 83 can vary in width as desired. The outer, horizontal shelf 83 can interface with an outer shelf 99 of the base 19 of the vaping device as shown in FIGs. 6-7.

The outer edge 64 can terminate more proximally compared to the inner edge 62, allowing a chamfered portion 91 to extend between the groove 84 and the outerhorizontal shelf 83. Chamfered portion 91 of the distal end 70 can interface with a chamfered portion 97 of the base 19 of the vaping device as shown in FIGs. 6-7.

Typical glass tanks have a curved distal end, and often require two gaskets for leak-proof assembly: one between the distal end of the tank and the outwardly extending flange, and one between the base and the distal end of the tank. Because the tank as described herein includes features to interface with the outwardly extending flange and the base, no gaskets are required. The distal base portion of the tank is able to nestle within the base of the vaping device without gaskets. In some examples, gaskets between these pieces are specifically excluded because leak-proof assembly can be achieved without the gaskets. The exclusion of gaskets can greatly reduce manufacturing time and costs associated with forming and placing the gaskets. As noted above, the features of the tank that interface with the other elements of the vaping system can be molded into a single mold and thus add minimal costs compared to separate structures.

According to another aspect, one or more notches and/or grooves can be provided on the distal end 70 of the tank 15. Mating notches and/or grooves can be provided on the base 19 of the vaping device. These notches can prevent the tank from spinning freely when in connection with the base. In addition to notches and/or grooves, other types of profiles can be formed in the inner shelf 80, chamfered portion 91, and/or outer shelf 83. These profiles can be formed into a unitary tank 15 by creating a mold that includes such structures.

According to another aspect, the base 19 of the vaping device includes an outer edge wall 102 that extends upwardly past the distal end 70 of the tank 15. This outer edge wall 102 can support the distal end 70 of the tank 15. In other configurations, the outer edge wall 102 does not extend past the distal end 70 of the tank 15. And in other examples, one or more external support rings can be provided around the distal end 70 of the tank to support the distal end 70 of the tank.

The description is only exemplary of the principles of the disclosure, and should not be viewed as narrowing the scope of the claims which follow, which claims define the full scope of the invention. Various aspects discussed in one drawing may be present and/or used in conjunction with the embodiment shown in another drawing, and each element shown in multiple drawings may be discussed only once. The described features, structures, or characteristics of configurations of the disclosure may be combined in any suitable manner in one or more configurations. In some cases, detailed description of well-known items or repeated description of substantially the same configurations may be omitted to facilitate the understanding of those skilled in the art by avoiding an unnecessarily redundant description. All statements herein reciting principles, aspects, and embodiments of the invention, as well as specific examples thereof, are intended to encompass equivalents thereof.

Reference in the specification to “one configuration” “one embodiment,” “a configuration” “an example,” or “an embodiment” means that a particular feature, structure, or characteristic described in connection with the configuration is included in at least one configuration, but is not a requirement that such feature, structure or characteristic be present in any particular configuration unless expressly set forth in the claims as being present. As used herein, a plurality of items, structural elements, compositional elements, and/or materials may be presented in a common list for convenience. However, these lists should be construed as though each member of the list is individually identified as a separate and unique member.

While methods are described herein in discrete steps in a particular order for the sake of clarity, the steps do not require a particular order and more than one step may be performed at the same time. For example, a later step may begin before earlier step completes. Or, a later step may be completed before an earlier step is started. Additionally, the word “connected” and “coupled” is used throughout for clarity of the description and can include either a direct connection or an indirect connection.
