In the disclosed variable spectral element, first and third sensors and second and fourth sensors are arranged symmetrically about a line connecting the centers of gravity of facing surfaces of a pair of optical substrates. Also, first through fourth actuators are arranged along lines extending from the centers of gravity of the facing surfaces of the pair of optical substrates in the directions of the centers of the first through fourth sensors, respectively. The disclosed variable spectral element is provided with a control unit that: uses signals from the first through fourth sensors to compute the distance between the centers of gravity of the facing surfaces of the pair of optical substrates; uses signals from the first and third sensors to compute a first angle that the facing surface of an optical substrate to be moved forms with a plane perpendicular to a line connecting the centers of gravity; uses signals from the second and fourth sensors to compute a second angle that a plane perpendicular to a line connecting the centers of gravity forms with the facing surface of an optical substrate to be moved; and drives the first through fourth actuators on the basis of the distance between the centers of gravity, the first angle, and the second angle.
