Abstract:
Provided are a novel variable valve device for an internal combustion engine and a variable valve control method, with which gas pressure from combustion in an initial explosion cylinder can be efficiently used and the startability of the internal combustion engine can be improved. The open time of a first exhaust valve, which takes place after combustion of an initial explosion cylinder (#2 cylinder) that first performs combustion in an expansion stroke during automatic startup, is adjusted on the basis of at least initial piston position information of the initial explosion cylinder during either automatic startup or the most recent automatic stoppage. Even when the initial piston position of the initial explosion cylinder differs, the gas pressure (combustion energy) of the initial explosion cylinder can be efficiently imparted to the piston, and satisfactory startability can be effectively achieved.
