Abstract:
During cold start-up of an internal combustion engine, an intake valve variable mechanism sets an intake valve opening timing (IVOc) to the retarded side of the exhaust top dead center by a predetermined angle (ITc) so as to be between the advanced side of the maximum retarded opening timing (IVOrtd) and the retarded side of the maximum advanced opening timing (IVOadv), and an exhaust valve variable mechanism sets an exhaust valve closing timing (EVCc) to the advanced side of the exhaust top dead center by a predetermined angle (ETc) so as to be between the retarded side of the maximum advanced closing timing (EVCadv) and the advanced side of the maximum retarded closing timing (EVCrtd), thereby forming a "negative valve overlap" (NVOc) where the intake valve opening timing (IVOc) and the exhaust valve closing timing (EVCc) do not overlap with each other.
