Abstract:
Provided is a vehicle communication system that takes less time in determining the position of a portable device and has good determination precision. The vehicle communication system comprises: an in-vehicle device (1) that transmits a signal from a plurality of antennas (3) disposed on a vehicle (C) when any of a plurality of operating units provided on the outer surface of the vehicle (C) is operated; and a portable device (2) that receives the signal transmitted from the in-vehicle device (1), measures the received signal strength of the received signal, and transmits a response signal containing the received signal strength of the measured signal. The in-vehicle device (1) stores information pertaining to each of a plurality of distinct areas that encompass a common passenger compartment space. The in-vehicle device (1) identifies the operating unit (5a) that is being operated among the plurality of operating units (5a) and selects information pertaining to one area from among the information pertaining to the plurality of areas in accordance with the identified operating unit (5a). The in-vehicle device (1) determines whether the portable device (2) is inside the area on the basis of the received signal strength contained in the response signal and the information pertaining to the one area selected.
