Provided is a vehicle control device which makes it possible to carry out rapid deceleration and steering of an ego-vehicle depending on the behavior of nearby vehicles, thereby reducing anxiety felt by a driver. The present invention is a vehicle control device (100) for controlling the driving of a vehicle, characterized by comprising: a nearby vehicle detection unit (10b) that detects nearby vehicles (3); a vehicle information receiving unit (26) that receives, from detected nearby vehicles, information pertaining to driving conditions; a speed distribution setting unit (10d) that sets a speed limit distribution (40), which defines the upper-limit values of relative speeds permitted in the vicinity of nearby vehicles detected by the nearby vehicle detection unit; and a control unit (10e) that controls the speed and/or steering of the ego-vehicle (1) so as to satisfy the speed limit distribution set by the speed distribution setting unit. The vehicle control device (100) is further characterized in that the speed distribution setting unit sets different speed limit distributions when the vehicle information receiving unit has been able to obtain information pertaining to driving conditions from nearby vehicles than when the speed distribution setting unit has been unable to obtain such information.
