Abstract:
According to various embodiments, the present invention provides a vehicle cover apparatus for covering a vehicle, the vehicle cover apparatus including a vehicle cover adapted to cover the vehicle; a compartment adapted to contain the vehicle cover, such that the compartment is adapted to be fixable to the vehicle, the compartment includes an aperture for the vehicle cover to extend therethrough, such that the vehicle cover is adapted to be extendable in a longitudinal direction from the compartment and retractable into the compartment via the aperture; a mechanism adapted to allow the vehicle cover to be extended and/or retracted from and/or into the compartment, the mechanism being housed within the compartment; and an actuator adapted to actuate the mechanism.

Claims:
A vehicle cover apparatus for covering a vehicle, the vehicle cover apparatus comprising: a vehicle cover adapted to cover the vehicle; a compartment adapted to contain the vehicle cover, wherein the compartment is adapted to be fixable to the vehicle, the compartment comprises an aperture for the vehicle cover to extend therethrough, wherein the vehicle cover is adapted to be extendable in a longitudinal direction from the compartment and retractable into the compartment via the aperture; a mechanism adapted to allow the vehicle cover to be extended and/or retracted from and/or into the compartment, the mechanism being housed within the compartment; and an actuator adapted to actuate the mechanism.

The vehicle cover apparatus of claim 1, wherein the vehicle cover comprises a plurality of corrugated lines extending along the longitudinal direction, wherein the vehicle cover is foldable along the plurality of corrugated lines to form ridges and valleys extending in the longitudinal direction.

The vehicle cover apparatus of claim 1 or 2, wherein the aperture comprises two opposite ends and two opposing sides extending from one of the two opposite ends to the other, wherein the compartment comprises a pair of guides disposed at the opposite ends, wherein the vehicle cover comprises two side edges opposite each other and extending in the longitudinal direction and a pair of rails extending along the two sides, wherein the pair of rails are slidably engaged to the pair of the guides.

The vehicle cover apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 3, further comprising a pair of liners disposed along the two opposing sides of the aperture, wherein the pair of liners is adapted to contact the vehicle cover and the vehicle cover is adapted to sweep the surface of the vehicle cover when the vehicle cover is being retracted into the compartment.

The vehicle cover apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 4, further comprising a plurality of guide pins disposed along one of the two opposing sides of the aperture and protrudes into the ridges or valleys of the vehicle cover, wherein the plurality of guide pins are adapted to guide the vehicle cover to maintain a spread out configuration along the length of the aperture during the extension or retraction of the vehicle cover.

The vehicle cover apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the mechanism comprises a gathering device adapted to gather the vehicle cover into the compartment.

The vehicle cover apparatus of claim 6, wherein the gathering device includes a roller shaft adapted to rotate within the compartment, wherein the roller shaft is adapted to roll the vehicle cover around it, wherein the vehicle cover is adapted to wrap around the roller shaft.

The vehicle cover apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the actuator comprises a handle adapted to be connected to the mechanism, wherein the handle is rotatable about the compartment, wherein rotating the handle in one direction extends the vehicle cover and rotating the handle in another direction opposite to the one direction retracts the vehicle cover.

The vehicle cover apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the mechanism further comprises a biasing element adapted to bias the gathering element to rotate the vehicle cover into the retracted configuration.

The vehicle cover apparatus of claim 9, wherein the biasing element comprises a coiled spring.

The vehicle cover apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 10, further comprising a mounting unit adapted to mount the compartment to the vehicle.

VEHICLE COVER APPARATUS

CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS [0001] The present application claims priority to Singapore application number 10201703175S, filed on 18 April 2017 and said application is hereby incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.

FIELD OF INVENTION

[0002] The present invention relates to the field of temporary covers for vehicles. For example, a vehicle cover apparatus adapted to cover vehicles.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0003] Vehicle covers are widely used by vehicle users, such as for scooters, motorcycles, cars, boats and the like. The vehicle users generally prefer covering the vehicles when unused for a reasonably longer period of time in order to protect the vehicles from weather conditions and pilferage of parts, vandalism and the kind when left unattended in public places.

[0004] As the maintenance of vehicles such as motorbikes can be costly, for example, it requires periodic cleaning, such as a chrome cleaning and polishing using various chemicals like steel polish cream, chrome cleaner, spray cleaner and many others. Therefore, protecting the vehicles from the harsh environment would help to reduce such maintenance and hence saves money for the user.

[0005] The currently available vehicle covers are generally carried in pouches by the vehicle users. For use, the user needs to take out the cover from the pouch, spread the cover over the vehicle followed by tying the cover to the vehicle at certain parts to prevent the cover from getting dislocated. While uncovering, the user unties and folds up the cover and puts it back in the pouch. The pouches thus need to be carried around by the user. For two wheelers, the users often keep the pouches with the covers in the vehicle storage boxes, thereby hardly leaving any space for accommodating any other item, for example, a second helmet. [0006] For other bigger vehicles, there are bigger spaces to accommodate the cover after use. However, the manual folding and unfolding operations for the bigger size covers are tedious to handle. [0007] When the vehicle in the covered condition is subjected to rain, the cover collects moisture. Thereafter, when the wet cover remains folded inside the pouch, it provides a suitable environment for growth of fungus. This makes the later usages unpleasant unless the cover is properly cleaned. [0008] Further, a conventional cover does not fit all sizes of vehicles as it usually not a "one- size fits all" design, unless one purchases a custom-made cover at great expense.

[0009] All these issues make the usage of the cover unpleasant and unattractive. Hence, if the user does not have a frequent maintenance of the vehicles, the condition of the vehicles may deteriorate over time

[0010] The present invention provides a vehicle cover apparatus that is adapted to address the issues described above, hence, provides a more efficient and user-friendly way of protecting the vehicles from the harsh environmental conditions.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0011] According to various embodiments, the present invention provides a vehicle cover apparatus for covering a vehicle, the vehicle cover apparatus including a vehicle cover adapted to cover the vehicle; a compartment adapted to contain the vehicle cover, such that the compartment is adapted to be fixable to the vehicle, the compartment includes an aperture for the vehicle cover to extend therethrough, such that the vehicle cover is adapted to be extendable in a longitudinal direction from the compartment and retractable into the compartment via the aperture; a mechanism adapted to allow the vehicle cover to be extended and/or retracted from and/or into the compartment, the mechanism being housed within the compartment; and an actuator adapted to actuate the mechanism.

[0012] According to various embodiments, the vehicle cover may include a plurality of corrugated lines extending along the longitudinal direction, such that the vehicle cover may be foldable along the plurality of corrugated lines to form ridges and valleys extending in the longitudinal direction.

[0013] According to various embodiments, the aperture may include two opposite ends and two opposing sides extending from one of the two opposite ends to the other, such that the compartment may include a pair of guides disposed at the opposite ends, such that the vehicle cover may include two side edges opposite each other and extending in the longitudinal direction and a pair of rails extending along the two sides, such that the pair of rails may be slidably engaged to the pair of the guides.

[0030] The following description presents several preferred embodiments of the present invention in sufficient detail such that those skilled in the art can make and use the invention.

[0031] Fig. la illustrates an example of an embodiment of the vehicle cover apparatus 100 being used to cover a vehicle 10, e.g. a two-wheeler vehicle. As shown in Fig. la, the vehicle cover apparatus 100 includes a compartment 160 adapted to contain the vehicle cover 120. Compartment 160 is adapted to be fixable to the vehicle 10. Compartment 160 includes an aperture for the vehicle cover 120 to extend therethrough. Vehicle cover 120 is adapted to be extendable in a longitudinal direction from and retractable into the compartment 160 via the aperture. In Fig. la, the vehicle cover 120 is shown to be in an extended configuration where the vehicle cover 120 is extended out from the compartment 160 in the longitudinal direction. Vehicle cover 120 is suitable for short term fast deployment as it enables an easier method of covering the vehicle 10, uncovering and storing the vehicle cover 120 in the vehicle instead of carrying around or occupying space in the vehicle 10.

[0032] Vehicle cover apparatus 100 may include an attaching element 122 connected to the vehicle cover 120 such that the attaching element 122 may be adapted to attach the vehicle cover 120 to the vehicle 10. Attaching element 122 may be at least one of a ring, pulling hook, a pull cord, a clip, etc. attached to the front end of the vehicle cover 120 and may be used by the user for pulling out the vehicle cover 120 during the extension of the vehicle cover 120. Vehicle cover apparatus 100 may include more than one attaching element 122 spaced apart from each other along the perimeter of the vehicle cover 120 so as to enable the vehicle cover 120 to be secured to a numerous parts of the vehicle 10. Attaching element 122 may be made from a rust proof material, e.g. stainless steel. Referring to Fig. la, the cover 120 is able to cover the vehicle 10 substantially. Preferably, the vehicle cover 120 is able to cover the vehicle 10 completely. For example, a bigger vehicle cover 120 may be used for a near complete coverage of the vehicle 10.

[0033] Vehicle cover apparatus 100 includes a mechanism (not shown in Fig. la) adapted to allow the vehicle cover 120 to be extended and/or retracted from and/or into the compartment 160. Mechanism may be manually or power operated. Mechanism may be housed within the compartment 160. [0034] As shown in Fig. la, the vehicle cover apparatus 100 may include an actuator 180 adapted to actuate the extension and/or retraction of the vehicle cover 120. As shown in Fig. la, the actuator 180 may extend from the compartment 160 so that the mechanism may be actuated from outside of the compartment 160. Actuator 180 may be a handle rotatable with respect to the compartment 160. Actuator 180 may be a handle connected to the mechanism which may be actuated to extend or retract the vehicle cover 120. Vehicle cover apparatus 100 may be permanently mounted on the vehicle 10 itself. [0035] Vehicle cover apparatus 100 may include a mounting unit (not shown in Fig. la) adapted to mount the vehicle cover apparatus 100 onto the vehicle 10. As shown in Fig. la, the vehicle cover apparatus 100 may be mounted onto the rear, e.g. at the seat, of the vehicle 10 via the mounting unit. Mounting unit may include securing elements, e.g. a bracket, clamps, etc. Vehicle cover apparatus 100 may be secured directly to the vehicle 10 via a fastener, e.g. screws.

[0036] A skilled person would appreciate that the user does not need to carry the vehicle cover 120 around or store it in the storage box thus occupying substantial space. Since the extension and retraction of the vehicle cover 120 is relatively easy, the user would be encouraged to use it more frequently. This would help to reduce the amount of maintenance required by the user on the vehicle 10. For example, the frequency of chrome cleaning, polishing, washing and waxing will be reduced. In this way, the vehicle cover apparatus 100 allows the vehicle components to last longer as well as provides the user time and cost savings. [0037] Fig. lb illustrates a view of the vehicle cover apparatus 100 in Fig. la with the vehicle cover 120 partially retracted into the compartment 160. When the user wishes to retract the vehicle cover 120 into the compartment 160, the user may activate the actuator 180 to actuate the mechanism to retract the vehicle cover 120 into the compartment 160 in the direction as shown by the arrow. Attaching element 122 may be released from the vehicle 10 before retracting the vehicle cover 120 into compartment 160. Vehicle cover 120 may be wound up by the mechanism into the compartment 160 by activating, e.g. rotating, the actuator 180.

[0038] Fig. lc illustrates the view of the vehicle cover apparatus 100 in Fig. la with the vehicle cover 120 totally retracted into the compartment 160. As shown in Fig. lc, when the vehicle cover 120 has been retracted into the compartment 160, the compartment 160 of the vehicle cover apparatus 100 is neatly disposed at the end of the vehicle 10 and does not occupy much space. In this embodiment, after complete retraction of the vehicle cover 120 into the compartment 160, the attaching element 122 may remain projected outside the compartment 160 so that during extension the user can easily access it.

[0039] Fig. 2a illustrates a perspective view of the vehicle cover apparatus 100 with the vehicle cover 120 extended from the compartment 160. As shown in Fig. 2a, the compartment 160 includes an aperture 124 for the vehicle cover 120 to extend out from the compartment 160. Aperture 124 may be an elongated slot having two opposite ends and two longitudinal sides extending from one of the opposite ends to the other. Vehicle cover 120 may be corrugated such that the vehicle cover 120 may include corrugated lines 118 extending along the longitudinal direction, i.e. along the length of the vehicle cover 120. Vehicle cover 120 may be folded along the plurality of corrugated lines 118 or folding lines to form a plurality of ridges 119R or valleys 119V between two adjacent corrugated lines 118 where the plurality of ridges 119R or valleys 119V extend along the longitudinal direction. The corrugated lines 118 may allow the vehicle cover 120 to be folded like a folding fan. In this way, the vehicle cover 120 may be folded neatly when it is retracted into the compartment 160. Vehicle cover 120 may be planar, i.e. without corrugated lines.

[0040] Referring to Fig. 2a, the vehicle cover 120 may include two side edges 126A,126B opposite each other and extending in the longitudinal direction where the corrugated lines 118 may extend between and in the direction of the two side edges 126A,126B. As shown in Fig. 2a, the two side edges 126A,126B may include a pair of rails 128A,128B extending along the two sides respectively. The purpose of the pair of rails will be shown below.

[0041] Fig. 2b illustrates a sectional view of the vehicle cover 120 in Fig. 2a along the line A- A. Referring to Fig. 2b, the compartment 160 may include a pair of guides 152A, 152B disposed at the opposite ends of the aperture 124 (not shown in Fig. 2b). Pair of rails may be slidably engaged to the pair of guides 152A,152B. Pair of guides 152A,152B may be adapted to receive the pair of rails 128A,128B within such that the pair of rails 128A,128B may glide within the pair of guides 152 A, 152B . Pair of guides 152A, 152B may be adapted to guide the vehicle cover 120 when the vehicle cover 120 is extending or retracting into the compartment 160. Pair of rails 128A,128B may be engaged to the pair of guides 152A,152B such that the pair of rails 128A,128B may be slidably retained within the pair of guides 152A,152B. Pair of guides 152A,152B may be open rings. In this way, the pair of guides 152A,152B is able to uniformly [0042] spread out the vehicle cover 120 along the width of the aperture 124 from one of the opposite ends to the other. Consequently, the vehicle cover 120 would be able to spread along the length of the mechanism when the mechanism retracts the vehicle cover 120 into the compartment 160.

[0043] Fig. 3a illustrates a perspective view of the vehicle cover apparatus 100 with the vehicle cover 120 retracted into the compartment 160. Referring to Fig. 3a, the vehicle cover apparatus 100 may include the mechanism 130. Mechanism 130 may include a gathering device 132 adapted to gather the vehicle cover 120 into the compartment 160. Actuator 180 may be connected to the gathering device 132 to actuate the gathering device 132 to rotate within the compartment 160. Referring to the embodiment in Fig. 3a, the gathering device 132 may include a roller shaft adapted to roll the vehicle cover 120 thereon. Roller shaft may be adapted to gather the vehicle cover 120 into the compartment 160. Mechanism 130 may include bearings (not shown in Fig. 3a) to provide a smooth rotation of the mechanism 130, i.e. roller shaft. Roller shaft, when actuated in one direction, rolls the vehicle cover 120 around it and retracts the vehicle cover 120 into the compartment 160. On the other hand, when the roller shaft is actuated in the opposite direction, the vehicle cover 120 may be unrolled from the roller shaft and extended from the compartment 160. Actuator 180 may be a handle extended from the compartment 160 and rotatably attached to the mechanism 130, e.g. the roller shaft. As such, it is shown that the vehicle cover 120 may be extended or retracted manually by rotating the handle. When the vehicle cover 120 is being extended from the compartment 160, as the vehicle cover 120 may be relatively flexible, it would be beneficial to pull the vehicle cover 120 by the attaching element 122 away from the compartment 160. Alternatively, the vehicle cover 120 may be extended by pulling the attaching element 122 without rotating the actuator 180 to unwind the vehicle cover 120 from the compartment 160. For example, the pair of rails 128A,128B may be stiff enough such that the vehicle cover 120 may be extended from the compartment 160 without pulling the attaching element 122. After extension, the attaching element 122 may be used to secure to some part of the vehicle 10 such that the vehicle cover 120 does not get blown by wind or get easily dislocated.

[0044] Fig. 3b is a perspective view of an assembly of two compartments as according to an embodiment of the invention. Referring to Fig. 3b, the vehicle cover apparatus 100 may include a plurality of guide pins 136 disposed along one of the two opposing sides of the aperture 124 and protrudes towards the other of the two opposing sides of the aperture 124. Plurality of guide pins 136 may be space equally from each other along the side of the aperture 124. Plurality of guide pins 136 may protrude into the ridges 119R or valleys 119V of the corrugated vehicle cover 120 to guide and maintain the vehicle cover 120 in a spread out configuration along the length of the aperture 124. Plurality of guide pins 136 may be adapted to cause the folding of the vehicle cover 120 alone the corrugated lines 118 so that the vehicle cover 120 may be folded like a folding fan during its retraction into the compartment 160. [0045] Compartment 160 may be made of a two-piece construction having a top portion and a bottom portion attachable to the top portion. Mechanism 130 and the vehicle cover 120 may be housed within the top portion and a bottom portion. Compartment 160 may be made from a recyclable material. Further, the compartment 160 may be made from a coloured polypropylene.

[0046] Vehicle cover apparatus 100 may include a pair of liners 134A,134B disposed along the two opposing sides of the aperture 124. Pair of liners 134A,134B may be adapted to be in contact with the vehicle cover 120 so as to sweep along the surfaces of the vehicle cover 120 when the vehicle cover 120 is being retracted into the compartment 160. In this way, any water that is on the vehicle cover 120 when it is being retracted into the compartment 160 can be removed or retained outside the compartment 160. Pair of liners 134A,134B may be disposed along the longitudinal opposing sides of the aperture 124. Pair of liners 134A,134B may be made of rubber, silicon compound, etc. that is able to provide a conforming contact with the vehicle cover 120 so as to improve the efficiency of removing the water that is on the vehicle cover 120 when it is wet. Pair of liners 134A,134B may have a profile therebetween that conforms to the profile of the vehicle cover 120, e.g. the ridges 119R and valleys 119V.

[0047] Vehicle cover apparatus 100 may include the mounting unit 129 adapted to mount the compartment 160 to the vehicle. Mounting unit 129 may be fixed to existing parts in the vehicle 10 via any means conventional methods, such as bolts and nuts, adhesive. Compartment 160 may include a mounting portion on the compartment 160 such that the compartment 160 may be attached directly to the vehicle 10, e.g. via conventional method, like bolts, screw, adhesive, etc. [0048] Mechanism 130 may include a biasing element (not shown in Fig. 3a) to bias the gathering element 132, e.g. the roller shaft, to rotate the vehicle cover 120 into the retracted configuration. When the vehicle cover 120 is being extended or pulled from the compartment 160, the biasing element may be biased. When the vehicle cover 120 is released, the biasing element may retract the vehicle cover 120 back into compartment 160. Biasing element may be a coil spring or the like.

[0049] Mechanism 130 may include a motor (not shown in Fig. 3a) for motorizing the retraction of the vehicle cover 120. In this embodiment, the actuator 180 may include a switch (not shown in Fig. 3a) on the compartment 160 connected to the motor and may be used to control the retraction and extension of the vehicle cover 120. Vehicle cover 120 may include a control unit connected to the switch and the motor to control the operation of the vehicle cover apparatus 100. Vehicle cover apparatus 100 may include a limiter (not shown in Fig. 3a) adapted to limit the extension and retraction of the vehicle cover 120, e.g. when the vehicle cover 120 is fully extended from or retracted into the compartment 160 so as to stop the mechanism 130 from extending or retracting the vehicle cover 120.

[0050] Alternatively, the gathering device 132 may include a pair of rollers adapted to contact each other. Vehicle cover 120 may be clamped in between the pair of rollers. Pair of rollers may be disposed at the aperture 124 or within the compartment 160 such that the vehicle cover 120 may be extended from the compartment 160 when the pair of rollers are rotated in opposing directions or retracted into the compartment 160 when the pair of rollers are rotated in the opposite opposing directions. [0051] Fig. 3b illustrates a perspective view of an assembly of two vehicle cover apparatus 100. Each of the two vehicle cover apparatus 100 may include attaching portions (not shown) to attach one vehicle apparatus 100 to another. The pair of vehicle cover apparatus 100 may include a first compartment 160A and a second compartment 160B. Further, the pair of vehicle cover apparatus 100 may include the mounting unit 129 adapted to mount the pair of vehicle cover apparatus 100 to the vehicle 10. First compartment 160A may accommodate a bigger vehicle cover 120 and the second compartment 160B may contain a smaller vehicle cover 120. In this way, it is possible to attach two vehicle cover apparatus 100 with vehicle covers 120 of different sizes.
