Abstract:
The present invention provides a vehicle drive device capable of using in-wheel motors to efficiently drive a vehicle, without becoming trapped in a cycle wherein the vehicle weight is increased as a result of increasing the drive strength of an electric motor. The present invention is a vehicle drive device (10) using in-wheel motors for driving a vehicle, and is characterized in that: the device is provided with in-wheel motors (20) which are provided to wheels (2b) of the vehicle (1) and drive the wheels, an internal combustion engine (12) which is provided to the body of the vehicle and drives the wheels, and a controller (24) which controls the in-wheel motors and the internal combustion engine on the basis of a requested output from a driver; when the requested output from the driver is less than a prescribed output, the controller causes the internal combustion engine to generate driving force while not causing the in-wheel motors to generate driving force; and when the requested output from the driver is the prescribed output or greater, the controller causes the internal combustion engine and the in-wheel motors to generate driving force.
