Abstract:

[Problem] To provide: a side air bag device capable of quickly and appropriately restraining a vehicle occupant in the early stage of expansion of an air bag; and a vehicle occupant protection device provided with the side air bag device. [Solution] A seat back is provided with a side support section located at a side section (end section) of the seat back in the vehicle width direction and protruding in the movement direction of the vehicle (forward of the vehicle). A seat frame for forming the framework of a seat is provided within a vehicle seat. A side air bag device is provided with an air bag inflating and expanding to restrain a vehicle occupant, and with an inflator for supplying inflation gas to the air bag. A side frame section which is a part of the seat frame is disposed within the side support section, and the side air bag device is accommodated outside the side frame section in the vehicle width direction. The air bag is provided with a main chamber expanding outward, forward of the side frame section, and with a sub-chamber expanding only within the side support section. The sub-chamber expands further forward than the front edge of the side frame, which faces forward of the vehicle, to cause at least the front portion of the side support section to be deformed and protrude toward the vehicle occupant.
