Disclosed are a vehicle speed control method and device, the method comprising: receiving a second speed value inputted by a user, and acquiring the first speed value of a vehicle; determining the speed difference value by deducting the first speed value from the second speed value; if the speed difference value is less than 0, then determining that the vehicle is in the brake control stage, and determining the braking force required by the vehicle to reach the second speed value from the first speed value; and if the speed difference value is greater than 0, then determining that the vehicle is in the traction control stage, and determining the traction force required by the vehicle to reach the second speed value from the first speed value. The present invention determines the speed difference value by deducting the first speed value from the second speed value , and classifies vehicle speed control into brake control and traction control by determining whether the speed difference value is positive or negative, such that speed control can be achieved via not only a vehicle traction system but also a vehicle brake system, enabling vehicle speed control to be more automatic, avoiding human speed control operation, and improving the safety of vehicle travelling.
