Description:
Vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT)

The subject of the invention is a vertical-axis wind turbine designed for cooperation with electricity generating devices

The wind turbine described in the patent specification PL 226941 is known. This turbine has a cylindrical rotor equipped with blades, permanently mounted on a vertical, rotary axis supported on bearings in the housing. The housing consists of the upper disc and the lower disc connected outside the rotor by fixed blades. The outer blades are in the form of helically twisted lobes with an arc-shaped crosssection. The rotor blades are shaped like an arc curved away from the curve of the outer blades. The outer blade curve radius is 2.5 - 3.0 times the rotor blade curve radius.

The vertical-axis wind turbine described in the patent specification US 10,648,452 is also known. This turbine consists of: a rotor unit mounted on a vertical axis in which each individual rotor block is joined into a unit by means of bolts,

- a shaft whose end is fastened in the uppermost rotor block to its flange by means of bolts, a tube that is the rotor block unit in which the tube holds the shaft flange and extends from the top of the rotor block to the bottom of the lower rotor block, a body whose base is set on a ring foundation by means of foundation bolts, a rotating column installed in the centre of the body and fixed on a bearing support.

The vertical-axis wind turbine according to the invention comprises a rotor permanently mounted on a rotary axis supported on bearings in the housing, which consists of the upper disc and the lower disc connected outside the rotor by connectors and guide vanes, which are in the form of helically twisted arched lobes. The turbine is characterized in that the turbine guide vanes and the rotor blades are made of plate segments reinforced on one side with ribs and interconnected with ribs towards each other, while the opposite surfaces are smooth and the individual segments are interconnected using the "tongue-and-groove" system. The turbine guide vanes and the rotor blades made of plate segments are made of three types of segments: inflow, middle and outflow segments. The turbine guide vanes are made of an inflow segment, two middle segments and an outflow segment. The rotor blades are made of an inflow segment, a middle segment and an outflow segment. The segment connection system is formed by the projections of the segments of two interconnected plates, which projections are embedded in a recess of the adjacent segment, and the projections are interconnected by a joint, preferably a screw joint. The turbine guide vane segments and the rotor blade segments have varying curvature and thickness. The inflow segments of the turbine guide vane and the rotor blade have a locally increased thickness on the air inlet side.

The vertical-axis wind turbine according to the invention is characterized in that it has a simple design and high functionality. The design of the turbine, and in particular the design of its blade guide vanes, allows it to be made of plastic with a very low specific weight, so that individual segments of the turbine can be transported and handled with the use of simple equipment. The design of the blades and guide vanes made of individual segments has allowed for the unification of their structure, so that the individual segments of the guide vanes and blades are the same.

The installation of the turbine, which must be located at a great height, can be done without the use of specialized equipment such as cranes. At the same time, due to the low weight of the rotor, the turbine can be quickly started even under the influence of a slight gust of wind. The special shape of the guide vanes causes a favourable wind flow to the turbine blades, without adverse disturbances and turbulence. The fact that the blades and guide vanes are made of plastic makes them completely resistant to weather conditions, so their service life will be much longer than that of the existing ones. Moreover, such a design of the turbine allows for free selection of its power by selecting the number of guide vane lobes and turbine blades. The only element that requires changing is the length of the metal mandrel.

The vertical-axis wind turbine according to the invention is explained in more detail in the embodiment shown in the figures; Fig.1 shows an axonometric view of the turbine, Fig. 2 shows a top view of the turbine structure with the top cover removed, Fig. 3 shows an enlarged view of the fragment of the Fig. 2 showing the shaft with the rotor blades attached, Fig.4 shows a side view of an example of a single rotor blade, Fig. 5 shows the connection of the segments of the guide vanes or the rotor blades, Fig.6 is a top view of the rotor blade excluding the connecting metal plate. Fig. 7 is a top view of the turbine guide vane excluding the connecting metal plate. Fig. 8 shows the joint of the opposite plates of both the rotor blades and the turbine guide vanes, Fig. 9 shows the connection of all plate layers of both the rotor blades and the turbine guide vanes, Fig.10 shows a detail of the connection presented in Fig. 9. Figures 11 a, b and c and Figures 12 a, b and c show an example of adjacent outflow segments of the guide vane or the blade made of two layers, Figures 13 a, b and c and Figures 14 a, b and c show an example of adjacent inflow segments of the guide vane or the blade made of two layers, Figures 15 a, b and c and Figures 16 a, b and c show an example of adjacent middle segments of the guide vane or the blade made of two layers, detail “B” is common for Figures 11 to 16.

As shown in Figures 1 to 16, the vertical-axis wind turbine according to the invention comprises a rotor 1 permanently mounted on a rotary vertical shaft 2 with a vertical axis of rotation. The shaft 2 is supported on bearings in the housing, which consists of the upper disc 3 and the lower disc 4 connected outside the rotor 1 by connectors 5 and guide vanes 6. The guide vanes 6 are in the form of helically twisted arched lobes. The turbine is characterized in that the turbine guide vanes 6 and the rotor blades 7 are made of segments: an inflow segment 8, a middle segment 9 and an outflow segment 10. Each segment if made of two plates 11 and 12 reinforced on one side with ribs 13 and interconnected with ribs 13 towards each other. The connection of plates 1 1 and 12 is shown in Fig. 8. The opposite surfaces of the segments are smooth. Individual segments 8, 9 and 10 are interconnected using the "tongue-and-groove" system. The connection system of segments 8, 9 and 10 is formed by projections 14 and 15 of individual segments 8, 9 of two interconnected plates 11 and 12, which projections 14 and 15 are embedded in a recess of the adjacent segment. Projections 14 and 15 are interconnected by a screw joint 19 as shown in Fig. 5. The arrangement of segments 8, 9 and 10 forms one lobe of guide vane 6 or blade 7, while guide vane 6 or blade 7 is formed of many interconnected lobes attached to metal plates 16 as shown in Fig. 4 and Fig. 9. This connection is shown in more detail in Fig. 10, where metal mandrel 17 is terminated with a threaded hole in which a screw 18 is attached to fix the set of lobes to metal plate 16. Both the turbine guide vanes 6 and the rotor blades 7 may contain three lobes each as well as five lobes each as shown in Fig. 4, and they may contain any number of lobes as shown in Fig. 9. It is essential that the turbine guide vanes 6 and the rotor blades 7 contain the same number of lobes. Therefore, such a design of the turbine allows for free selection of its power. The connection of plates 1 1 and 12 is shown in Fig. 8 where the connecting element is a bolt 20 secured with a nut 21 , which is an example of connection, as these elements can be connected with any connecting element. Plates 22 and 23 reinforced with ribs 24, shown in Figures 13 and 14, are interconnected in the same way, Fig. 13 consists of three projections: a - ribbing side view of the plate, b - side view and c- top view.

Similarly, Fig. 14 consists of three projections: a - ribbing side view of the plate, b - side view and c- top view.

The same arrangement is shown in Figures 1 1 and 12 and in Figures 15 and 16.

The turbine is assembled as follows. Individual sets of plates are arranged: plates 1 1 and 12 with ribs 13 facing each other, plates 25 and 26 with ribs 27 facing each other and plates 22 and 23 with ribs 24 facing each other. Individual sets of plates are joined using the joint shown in Fig. 8. After all the joints have been made, the individual sets are connected to each other using the joint shown in Fig. 5, two middle segments 9 are used to make guide vane 6 as shown in Fig.7 and one middle segment 9 is used to make blade 7 as shown in Fig. 6. The lobes thus formed are arranged vertically and connected to metal plates 16 by means of pins 17 and bolts 18 as shown in Figures 9 and 10. Both the rotor blade 7 and the turbine guide vane 6 are made in this way. A turbine is assembled in a known way from the light-weight components thus produced, which are easily transported to a great height.
