Title:
VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/1997/020142
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
The invention relates to an oscillatory paddle eolian power station with a system for adjusting the speed of rotations and for energy storage. The power station comprises structure supporting the vertical shaft impeller (1). The power station impeller is made of light construction materials using external rings (7), spokes (8) and vertical and horizontal anchorage systems provided with thin bars or flexible cables (5) allowing a noiseless rotation and a lower dynamic stress. The rotation adjustment process is achieved by two pairs of special closing and opening devices (15 and 16) of the paddle stroke (3). The devices (15 and 16) adjust the speed of rotation, protect the station (shut-down) against high wind, or put the paddles (3) out of operation, during a failure. Also, the devices (15 and 16) damp the impacts by limiting the paddle stroke with magnetic and electromagnetic field or by elastic materials so that the paddles (3) produce useful forces on the return half-circumference (against the wind). The storage of the wind allows a maximum usage of the wind energy, from 4 m/s to 50 m/s, by changing into electric power, without voltage and frequency limitations, which can be changed into chemical, thermal and potential energy and stored according to the diagram in fig. 11.

TECHNICAL FIELD

This invention covers on eolian electnc power plant, oscillation and free of vibration intended to convert eolian energy to electπc power and is based on a procedure of conversion of revolutions and protection of the plant turbine as well as on a procedure of stonng eolian energy obtained after conversion into other forms of energy This energy care be used for individual users or as electric power input in the national mains system BACKGROUND ART The utilization ol eolian energy can be made in a power plant as defined in patent USA

Nr 4101244/1976 This power plant has a beanng structure consisting of four columns and two beams supporting at the top the vertical shaft impeller on which are mounted pairs of massive latticed beam tupe jibs between which oscillate honzontally on one power step the paddles actuated by hydraulic piston rods which are in turn actuated by a cam device Adjustment of revolutions can be done by braking while stopping is done by an electromotor installed in the power plant

This power plant has the following drawbacks massive and intncate construction, low eolian energy conversion rate, braking is a stress on the plant, etc

The French patent No 1133415/1956 is also known It uses two vertical beams and two cross ties as beanng structure for the impeller made up of a vertical cylinder of sheet metal with disks set at the extremities, being the support of the paddle oscillating round an axle secured at one extremity while the revolution is caused by limiting the paddle stroke around the drum

This turbine has the following drawbacks, low performance, high vibration to paddles, etc DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION

The eolian electnc power plant with oscillating paddles, free of vibrations, as desenbed by this invention eliminates the above inconveniences by that the impeller ot the plant is a light multi-step power vertical construction consisting ol a vertical central tube axle on which paddles or their spokes and all power steps are vertically and honzontally anchored by means of their bars or flexible cables on each power step between paddles or spokes oscillate the wind vanes or

paddles or without wind vanes paddles made of fibre glass or other light mateπals around the symmetncal or eccentncal axles between two special devices acting as switch on/off of the stroke

This invention offers the following advantages: light constructions, silent revolution, elimination of vibration and of paddle actuators, low investment, opportunity of industnal application.

The revolution adjustment procedure as defined in this invention removes the above drawbacks in that the adjustment of the turbine revolutions and emergency stoppage can be achieved by stopping the paddles by two devices which on and off of the paddle stroke. This procedure has the following advantages: in the adjusting process no plant component is subject to additional stress, is safe in operations, has simple automation opportunities and can be applied on industnal scale

The process ot eolian energy storage according to the invention removes all inconveniences imposed by frequency and voltage ot eolian electncal energy as it is turned and stored in other energy forms and consumed as required

The process according to the invention has the following advantages: intensive use of eolian energy that is of wind energies exceeding 40-60 km/h velocities, possibilities for energy supply of isolated consumers as well, possibilities of industnal scale applications. BEST MODE OF CARRYING OUT OF THE INVENTION

Eolian power station with oscillation paddle free of vibrations, according to the invention, is provided with a turbine with one central shaft 1 on which are radially mounted paddles 2 or spokes 8 via disks 1 1 , and at the outside flexible cables or their bars 5 and outer nngs 7, respectively at the bottom shaft 1 is connected to speed multiplied 4 actuating generators 6 The turbine that may be achieved in one or several power steps is supported at the top side by beam 10 mounted on two to tour columns 9 and vertically and horizontally anchored with thin bars or flexible cables 5 Between blades 2 or spokes 8 paddles 3 with wind vanes 13 with or without magnets 12, paddle whose stroke is limited by two pairs of stroke switch on and off devices, with vanous operation

In case that oscillation angle is limited between 70 and 120°, paddles 3 may yield a useful torque on the return semi -circumference as well. The inners stroke switch on and off device 15 and the outer stroke switch on and off device 16 are mounted on blades, spokes or anchors.

Speed adjustment or stop process according to the invention is provided by paddles 3 and two pairs of devices for each paddle with vanous operations which switches on and off its stroke The inner stroke switch on and off device 15 consists of a part with limit rod 19 and control rod 20 which may rotate round a shaft 21 on the horizontal, an electromagnet 17 and a spnng 18

The anter stroke switch on and ott device 16 consists ot a part with limit rod 13 and control rod 20 that may rotate round a shaft 21 on the honzontal as the device 15, or spπng 18, and a rigid limit fitted with flexible part 22 or with permanent magnet 25

Under normal operation conditions in position A. B, F, G and H, electromagnets 17 maintain control rod 20 attracted and limit rod 19 in operation, respectively, up to position C when cunent in electromagnet coil 17 is intemipted and attraction portative force of control rod

20 and resistive force of limit rod 1 cease, so that paddle 3 is out ot operation by passing to a minimum resistance position

From position E paddles 3 pass in normal operation position by outside switch on and switch off device 16 due to aerodynamic pressure force exerted by paddles which overcome the strength of spnng 18 of keeping the rods 19 and 20 in normal position To eliminate the shocks on limiting rods 19 are mounted elastic parts made of rubber or other matenals becoming limitenng rods with elastic parts 23 or magnets becoming hmitenng rods with permanent magnets 24 To reduce the shocks, on stiff limiters of outside device 16 can be mounted elastic parts (rubber, etc ) becoming stift limiters with elastic parts 22 or with magnets becoming stiff limiters with permanent magnets 25

The two pairs of devices that dnve a paddle have different functional role as electnc control signal are transmitted only to inside device 15 which switch on the stroke of paddle 3 to continue the stroke only in the required rotation sense and not reverse and outside device 16 switches on without control the stroke of paddle 3 admitted by device 15 to come back in normal operation position and never reverse. That is always the stroke of paddle 3 has a rotation movement by devices 15 and 16 reverse of turbine rotating movement The method of eolian energy storage according to the invention consists in transforming the eolian electncal energy without voltage and frequency restnctions, in other forms of energy and then stored according to transformations diagram

The electnc energy of eolian electnc plant 27 is transformed in chemical energy in H 2 by electrolysis or other method in electrolyzer 28 or other apparatus, and stored in 29 and consumed if needed as electncal energy by motor-generator group 30

In another vanant eolian electnc energy is transformed in potential energy and stored with pumps group 31 which pumps water from downstream of dams upstream of this and consumed afterwards as electncal energy after transformation by the generators of hydroelectnc power stations 32 In another vanant eolian electnc energy frequency 1, is multiplied as frequency in f 2 in frequency converter 33 and then consumed to obtain carbide in furnace 34 and lime in kiln 35

As per other version, eolian electnc energy is converted in thermal power in the boiler 36 and then converted in electnc power for the national mains system or isolated users by means of the turbine 37 and the generator 38, and the supplementary thermal power going out ot turbine is recovered by means ot the heat exchanger 39
