A vertical electrically driving device with a brake and a work machine. The brake part (13) of the swing driving device (10) disposed around a vertically extending rotating shaft body (121) in a non-contact state comprises a vertically movable piston (133), a fixed plate (135) disposed on the lower side of the piston (133), and a friction plate (134) disposed between the piston (133) and the fixed plate (135), rotatable together with the rotating shaft body (121), and slidable along the rotating shaft body (121). When the piston (133) is moved downward, the friction plate (134) is pressed against the fixed plate (135) by the piston (133) to generate a brake torque so as to move the piston (133) upward for releasing the brake. The brake part also comprises a coiled spring (138) raising, when the brake is released, the friction plate (134) to a position between the piston (133) and the fixed plate (135) where the friction plate is not brought into contact with the piston (133) and the fixed plate (135).
