Abstract:
A microwave smelting furnace has a starting material feed opening at the top of a vertical furnace body, and a hearth member that can move up and down is provided in a hearth section. A microwave irradiation chamber that connects with the inside of the vertical furnace body is provided surrounding the hearth section. The inner surface of the microwave irradiation chamber is constructed with copper, a copper alloy, or the like that reflects microwaves. A starting material is introduced into the microwave irradiation chamber through an opening between a side section at the lower part of the vertical furnace body and the hearth member and the starting material is irradiated with microwaves (MW) with high efficiency in a concentrated manner inside the microwave irradiation chamber. Thus, iron ores in the heated starting material are reduced by a carbon source, molten pig iron is produced, and the molten pig iron is removed through an output port. Molten pig iron can thus be manufactured with high energy efficiency in lieu of blast furnace ironmaking, and precious metals, etc., can be recovered from so-called urban mines.
