This video display device is provided with: a display element which modulates light from an illumination optical system, and displays video; and an ocular optical system which guides video light from the display element into an optical pupil. The illumination optical system is provided with: a light source provided with a plurality of light emission points which are substantially arranged in a straight line; a diffusion panel which diffuses illumination light from the light source in a first direction, i.e. the direction in which the plurality of light emission points are arranged, and which does not diffuse said illumination light in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction; and an optical element which bends, in a second direction, the illumination light in the optical system from the optical pupil to the light source such that the optical pupil and the light source are substantially conjugate. The optical element comprises one illumination mirror. A reflective surface of the illumination mirror has a curvature which is not 0 at optical-axis intersection points in all cross sections including a normal line. The curvature in a cross section orthogonal to the first direction is different to the curvature in a cross section orthogonal to the second direction.
