Provided are viewfinder device and camera which are easy to use for photographers. A viewfinder device is equipped with: a case provided with an optical system; a light shielding plate which is inserted in the optical system, and which can be linearly moved between a light shield position, in which beams of light from an object to be imaged are cut off, and a withdrawal position, in which the beams of light are not blocked; and a drive member for shifting the light shielding plate between the light shield position and the withdrawal position. The drive member comprises: a rotating member which rotates about an axis perpendicular to the plane on which the light shielding plate is located; and an engagement portion which is engaged with the light shielding plate and which shifts the light shielding plate in response to the rotation of a rotating portion. Assuming an imaginary line which passes through the axis and which is parallel to the direction in which the light shielding plate is shifted, a stopper for restricting the movement of the light shielding plate is provided at a position at which the arc trajectory of the engagement portion intersects with the imaginary line when the rotation member is rotated.
