Abstract:
Provided is a virtual image display optical system and a display device which are capable of improving the brightness or visibility of a virtual image. This virtual image display optical system (30) displays an image, formed by an image formation element (11) serving as a display device, by projecting a virtual image of said image on an eye box (EB). The virtual image display optical system is provided with: an intermediate screen (16) arranged in the vicinity of an intermediate image (T1) formation position; a projection optical system positioned closer to the image formation element (11) than the intermediate screen (16); and a virtual image formation optical system (30b) positioned closer to a display screen (20) than the intermediate screen (16). The intermediate screen (16) has a diffusion surface (16m); on the diffusion surface (16m), the diffusivity in a first direction corresponding to the horizontal direction of the eye box (EB) differs from the diffusivity in a second direction corresponding to the vertical direction of the eye box (EB), the second direction being nearly perpendicular to the first direction; and the magnitude relationship between the length and width of the eye box (EB) matches the magnitude relationship between the diffusivity in the first direction and the diffusivity in the second direction.
