Abstract:
A viscosity modifier for lubricating oils which is capable of giving a lubricating oil composition excellent in low-temperature properties; and a lubricating oil composition which contains the viscosity modifier and has excellent low-temperature properties. The modifier comprises: an ethylene/propylene copolymer (A) which has a density of 857 to 882 kg/m?3¿, an Mw of 80,000 to 400,000, and an Mw/Mn of 2.3 or lower and in which the density (D: kg/m?3¿) and the melting point (Tm: °C) satisfy the relationship Tm=1.247xD-1037; an ethylene/propylene copolymer (B) which has an ethylene content of 70 to 79 wt.%, an Mw of 80,000 to 250,000, excluding 250,000, an Mw/Mn of 2.3 or lower, and a Tm of 15 to 60 °C and in which the ethylene content (E: wt.%) and the melting point (Tm: °C) satisfy the relationship 3.44xE-206=Tm; or an ethylene/propylene copolymer (C) which has an ethylene content of 70 to 79 wt.%, an Mw of 250,000 to 400,000, an Mw/Mn of 2.3 or lower, and a Tm of 15 to 60 °C and in which the ethylene content (E: wt.%) and the melting point (Tm: °C) satisfy the relationship 3.44xE-204=Tm. The composition comprises a combination of any of the ethylene/propylene copolymers (A), (B), and (C) with a lube base oil (D) and optionally contains a pour point depressant (E).
