The present invention relates to a washing machine. The washing machine comprises a housing, a tub is arranged inside the housing, and a metal detector for detecting metal parts in the tub is mounted inside the housing. The washing machine is provided with a metal detector so as to accurately detect whether metal articles are contained in the load to be washed in the tub, and the situation in which articles such as keys and coins are forgotten in a pocket of the load to be washed is thus prevented, thereby not only improving the washing experience for a user, but also avoiding the situation where the load is scratched by metal articles during the washing process. The present invention further relates to a washing machine control method, which is used for detecting clothes to be washed in the tub and detecting whether metal articles are contained in the tub. By means of the control method, the situation where the metal articles are mistakenly washed by the washing machine is effectively eradicated, and the foreign matter detection initiative and the level of intelligence of the washing machine are improved, thereby improving the washing effect and reducing the probability of damaging clothes to be washed during the washing process.
