A washing machine (1) according to the present invention is provided with a washing and dewatering tub (4), a water tank (3), a drive means (7), a water circulation channel (15), a cover (16), and a discharge passage (17). The washing and dewatering tub (4) has at the bottom a pulsator (5) for stirring the articles (25) to be washed. The washing and dewatering tub (4) is rotatably installed inside the water tank (3). The drive means (7) causes the pulsator (5) and/or the washing and dewatering tub (4) to rotate. The water circulation channel (15) is provided inside the water tank (3) so as to allow passage therethrough in the vertical direction up to the top part of the water tank (3), and the water circulation channel (15) transports water inside the water tank (3) up to the top part of the water tank (3) when the washing and dewatering tub (4) is rotating. The cover (16) is provided at the top part of the water tank (3), the cover (16) having an opening (16a) for inserting the articles to be washed (25) into the washing and dewatering tub (4). The discharge passage (17) is provided in the cover (16), and is a passage for discharging water rising up through the water circulation channel (15) into the washing and dewatering tub (4). A discharge opening (18) provided to the discharge route (17) has a shape with a wider width and a shorter height than the discharge passage (17).
