Provided are: a water absorption treatment material from which a bad smell is less likely to be leaked to the surrounding area; and a method for producing the water absorption treatment material. This water absorption treatment material 1 absorbs a liquid containing a substance having a bad smell. The water absorption treatment material 1 comprises a granular body 10. The granular body 10 has water-absorbing properties. The granular body 10 contains paper, silica gel and diatomaceous earth as the three major materials.
