Abstract:
A water-based coating composition which is prepared from a resin that is easy to prepare under mild conditions, is excellent in storage stability, can take various formulations depending upon the required coating properties and film performance, and is suitably applied to metal cans to form a film excellent in flavor, tightness, resistance to boiling water, workability and so on. This composition is a dispersion in an aqueous solution of a primary or secondary amine or an inorganic alkali of a composition comprising: (A) a modified epoxy resin having two terminal quaternary ammonium hydroxide groups in the molecule, prepared by reacting an epoxy resin having two terminal 1,2-epoxy groups in the molecule and an epoxy equivalent of 400 to 5,000 with a tertiary amine in an amount of 1 to 1.1 equivalents per equivalent of the epoxy resin in a solvent in the presence of water; and (B) a carboxylated polymer having at least one carboxyl group in the molecule, an average molecular weight of 1,000 to 200,000, and an acid value of 50 to 400 mg/mg, wherein the molar ratio of the carboxyl groups of the polymer (B) to the quaternary ammonium hydroxide groups of the resin (A) is 1.2 to 6.0 : 1.0.
