A water heater and a control method therefor. The water heater comprises a compressor (10), a four-way valve (12), a three-way valve (14), a first heat exchanger (16), a first fan assembly (18), a second fan assembly (22), a water tank (24), a second heat exchanger (20), a detection module, and a controller; an air outlet of the compressor (10) is connected to a first end of the four-way valve (12), a second end of the four-way valve (12) is connected to one end of the first heat exchanger (16), and a third end of the four-way valve (12) is connected to one end of the second heat exchanger (20); the other end of the first heat exchanger (16) is connected to an outer coil at the upper portion of the water tank (24); the other end of the second heat exchanger (20) is connected to an outer coil at the lower portion of the water tank (24); the three-way valve (14) is provided on a pipeline between the four-way valve (12) and the first heat exchanger (16); the controller is connected to the detection module.
