The purpose of the present invention is to provide: a water-soluble yellow dye (compound) which exhibits high water solubility and high color developability and which ensures excellent saturation of recorded images; and a yellow ink composition which contains the same and which is for use in various recording processes, particularly in inkjet recording. An ink composition which exhibits not only high color developability but also saturation and hue suitable for inkjet recording and which ensures excellent various fastnesses of recorded matter and excellent storage stability of recorded images has been obtained by using a water-soluble azo compound represented by formula (1) or a salt thereof, or an ink composition containing the same. In formula (1), x is an integer of 2 to 4, and A is an amino group represented by formula (2) or (3). In formula (2), y is an integer of 1 to 5. In formula (3), n is an integer of 0 to 2, and Z is a hydrogen atom, carboxy or sulfo.
