Claims

The claims defining the invention are as follows:

1. Apparel with communication apparatus comprising apparel that is wearable and a communication interface for wireless connection to a mobile communication device wherein a wearer of the apparel can use the mobile communication device through use of the communication interface.

2. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the communication interface is mountable in the apparel in a discreet manner.

3. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the communication interface is mountable in the apparel in a substantially completely hidden manner when the apparel is worn and the mobile communication device is able to be used in this condition.

4. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the communication interface is controllable substantially hands free.

5. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the communication interface is controllable at least partially by voice control.

6. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the communication interface is controllable at least partially by motion control.

7. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the communication interface is controllable at least partially by motion detector in the communication interface which is controllable by the upper body of the wearer of the apparel that is wearable on or near the head of a user.

8. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the communication interface is controllable at least partially by the motion detector detecting predetermined motions of the head the wearer.

9. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the communication interface is controllable at least partially by the motion detector detecting predetermined motions of the upper body including neck or shoulders of the wearer.

10. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the communication interface is substantially self-contained in the apparel.

11. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the apparel is a headgear.

12. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the apparel is a neckgear.

13. Apparel with communication apparatus for wireless connection to a mobile communication device being transported by the wearer of the apparel, the apparel with communication apparatus comprising: a. apparel that is wearable; and b. a communication interface substantially self-contained in the apparel in a substantially hidden mode when worn by the wearer; wherein a wearer of the apparel can use the mobile communication device through use of the communication interface.

14. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 13 wherein the communication interface includes a signal transmitter/receiver for communication to the mobile communication device.

15. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 13 wherein the signal transmitter/receiver uses Bluetooth™.

16. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 13 wherein the signal transmitter/receiver uses WiFi.

17. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 13 wherein the communication interface includes audio output allowing for receipt of aural communication from the mobile communication device.

18. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 13 wherein the communication interface for engaging the skull of the wearer when the apparel is worn and includes bone conduction aural transfer technology.

19. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 13 wherein the communication interface includes voice receiver for detecting verbal communication from the wearer while the apparel is worn.

20. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 13 wherein the communication interface includes a power storage and connection from external power source and connected to disperse power to one or more of the elements of the communication interface.

21. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 13 wherein the communication interface includes controls that can be activated by the wearer of the apparel without removal of the apparel.

22. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 13 wherein the communication interface includes controls that can be activated by the wearer of the apparel from external of the apparel without removal of the apparel.

23. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 21 wherein the apparel is a baseball cap and the communication interface includes controls includes a small command button located on the inner side of the cap, hidden from human eye, to control the communication apparatus.

24. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 21 wherein the buttons presented include a volume control, split speaker control, and command/pairing mode button.

25. Apparel with communication apparatus according to claim 13 wherein the communication interface includes motion detector that can be activated by the wearer of the apparel by movement of the head or upper body of the wearer.

26. Apparel with communication apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the communication interface allows the wearer of the apparel to create and answer telephone calls on the mobile device substantially hands free and substantially discreetly.

27. Apparel with communication apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the communication interface allows the wearer of the apparel to create and answer SMS communications or emails on the mobile device substantially hands free and substantially discreetly.

28. Apparel with communication apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the communication interface allows the wearer of the apparel to undertake searches on the World Wide Web on the mobile device substantially hands free and substantially discreetly.

29. Apparel with communication apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the communication interface allows the wearer of the apparel to control and play and listen to music on the mobile device substantially hands free and substantially discreetly.

30. Apparel with communication apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the communication interface allows the wearer of the apparel to undertake GPS control and navigation using the mobile device substantially hands free and substantially discreetly. 31. A communication interface, comprising: an elongate body capable of being mounted to a wearable apparel; a power source; a wireless signal transmitter and receiver for communicating with a mobile communication device; an audio input device; and an audio output device; wherein said elongate body is capable of being reconfigured between a flat configuration and a substantially curved configuration to suit the shape of the apparel. 32. The communication interface according to claim 31, wherein the body houses a flexible printed circuit board on which the electronic components are mounted, stiffening portions are affixed to the printed circuit board adjacent the location of the electronic components to resist flexing of the printed circuit board at the location of the electronic components. 33. The communication interface according to claim 32, wherein the body includes groove formations, wherein the groove formations are located adjacent portions of the printed circuit board in which stiffening portions are absent, wherein the grove formations promote bending of the body at the groove formations when the body is being reconfigured. 34. The communication interface according to any one of claims 31 to 33, wherein the elongate body is formed of a sleeve and end caps.

35. The communication interface according to claim 34, wherein the sleeve is formed of a water-resistant material.

36. The communication interface according to claim 35, wherein the sleeve is formed of silicone.

37. The communication interface according to any one of claims 31 to 36, wherein said wireless transmitter and receiver is a Bluetooth™ transceiver.

38. The communication interface according to any one of claims 31 to 36, wherein said power source is a rechargeable battery.

39. The communication interface according to claim 38, wherein said body includes a power port to allow connection to an external power source to recharge the battery.

40. The communication interface according to any one of claims 31 to 39, wherein said body includes at least one data port for allowing data connection with an external device.

41. The communication interface according to any one of claims 31 to 40, wherein said body includes an audio output port for allowing connection to headphones.

42. The communication interface according to any one of claims 31 to 41, wherein said body includes raised control buttons.

43. The communication interface according to any one of claims 31 to 42, wherein said body is formed with a curved profile on at least one external surface.

Description:
WEARABLE COMMUNICATION INTERFACE

Field of the Invention

The present invention relates to apparel with communication apparatus. The invention has been developed primarily for use with fashion and clothing including headgear such as hats or caps with communication apparatus such as mobile phones or notebooks and will be described hereinafter with reference to this application. However, it will be appreciated that the invention is not limited to this particular field of use.

Background of the Invention

Mobile communication devices are now the most commonly used communication techniques and include a wider range of functions. This includes a multitude of computer based functions. The mobile phone therefore has become much more powerful and much more energy driven and bandwidth driven. A number of problems can occur due to these developments. One problem is that smartphones are quite difficult to use and access during many parts of our daily life. This includes areas such as driving, exercising or rushing out of the house to get to a meeting on time, when hands are being used for other purposes. It is not possible to hold or control the smartphones at these times.

Another problem includes the times that discreet use is required and it is not appropriate to be seen holding a mobile phone. However you might duly have full attention on the present function but are awaiting a communication. Other times you might not wished to be seen to be on the mobile phone.

A further problem is that having such a powerful tool such as a mobile phone close to your head for long periods can be dangerous. The trouble is that the phone is constructed and powered to operate over a wide bandwidth and over a long distance. Many of the functions on the mobile phone could be operating in the background and therefore not require your direct attention for long periods. However, if for the one action you are undertaking requires holding the mobile phone to your head, the multitude of other functions is occurring and you are being subjected to a full spectrum of bandwidth at the high power intensities. This could increase the likelihood of ill effect over a long term.

Therefore it can be seen that in the modern usage of mobile technology there needs to be a modification of its use to the benefit of the user. The present invention seeks to provide an apparatus with communication, which will overcome or at least ameliorate one or more of the deficiencies of the prior art, or to at least provide an alternative.

It is to be understood that, if any prior art information is referred to herein, such reference does not constitute an admission that the information forms part of the common general knowledge in the art, in Australia or any other country.

Summary of the Invention

According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided apparel with communication apparatus comprising apparel that is wearable on or near the head of a wearer and a communication interface for wireless connection to a mobile communication device wherein a wearer of the apparel can use the mobile communication device through use of the communication interface.

Preferably the communication interface is mountable in the apparel in a discreet manner. In particular in one form the communication interface is mountable in the apparel in a substantially completely hidden manner when the apparel is worn and the mobile communication device is able to be used in this condition.

The apparel with communication apparatus can have the communication interface being controllable substantially hands free. Preferably the communication interface is controllable at least partially by voice control and/or controllable at least partially by motion control.

In one form the communication interface can be controllable at least partially by motion detector in the communication interface which is controllable by the upper body of the wearer of the apparel that is wearable on or near the head of a user. Preferably the communication interface is controllable at least partially by the motion detector detecting predetermined motions of the head the wearer and/or controllable at least partially by the motion detector detecting predetermined motions of the upper body including neck or shoulders of the wearer.

The apparel with communication apparatus can have the communication interface being substantially self-contained in the apparel. Preferably the apparel is a headgear such as a hat or cap or bandana. Preferably the apparel is a neckgear such as scarf, cravat or tie. In one particularly preferred form the invention provides apparel with communication apparatus for wireless connection to a mobile communication device being transported by the wearer of the apparel, the apparel with communication apparatus comprising: apparel that is wearable on or near the head of a wearer; and a communication interface substantially self-contained in the apparel in a substantially hidden mode when worn by the wearer; wherein a wearer of the apparel can use the mobile communication device through use of the communication interface.

The communication interface includes a signal transmitter/receiver for communication to the mobile communication device. Preferably the signal transmitter/receiver uses Bluetooth™ or uses WiFi.

The communication interface can include an audio output. In one form the audio output are earphones allowing for receipt of aural communication from the mobile communication device. The audio output can be speakers mounted in the apparel. Preferably the communication interface for engaging the skull of the wearer when the apparel is worn and includes bone conduction aural transfer technology.

The communication interface can include a voice receiver for detecting verbal communication from the wearer while the apparel is worn.

The communication interface can include a power storage and connection from external power source and connected to disperse power to one or more of the elements of the communication interface.

Preferably the communication interface includes controls that can be activated by the wearer of the apparel without removal of the apparel. More preferably the communication interface includes controls that can be activated by the wearer of the apparel from external of the apparel without removal of the apparel.

The communication interface can include motion detector that can be activated by the wearer of the apparel by movement of the head or upper body of the wearer. The apparel with communication apparatus can have the communication interface allowing the wearer of the apparel to undertake one or more of the following: create and answer telephone calls on the mobile device substantially hands free and substantially discreetly. to create and answer SMS communications or emails on the mobile device substantially hands free and substantially discreetly. to undertake searches on the World Wide Web on the mobile device substantially hands free and substantially discreetly. to control and play and listen to music on the mobile device substantially hands free and substantially discreetly. to undertake GPS control and navigation using the mobile device substantially hands free and substantially discreetly. Therefore it can be seen that invention provides apparel with communication apparatus and is so much handier as so many people today wear various types of hats, especially baseball caps which can have a Bluetooth™ device within the hat to allow a user to send messages, answer phone calls, even play your music without ever having to touch your phone.

Other aspects of the invention are also disclosed.

Brief Description of the Drawings

Figure 2 is a diagrammatic block view of constituent elements of the communication interface of a apparel with communication apparatus in accordance with the present invention such as the preferred embodiment of Figure 1 ; Figure 3 is a diagrammatic view of an apparel with communication apparatus in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention with a powering device and views of alternative mobile communication devices able to be connected by the communication interface of the present invention;

Figure 4 is a diagrammatic view of forms of communication able to be instigated by the wearer of an apparel with communication apparatus in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention with possibly connected mobile communication devices through the communication interface of the present invention;

Figure 5 is a diagrammatic view of a further embodiment of apparel with communication apparatus in accordance with the present invention in which the apparel includes a computer processor forming at least part of the communication interface;

Figure 6 is a plan view of a further embodiment of a communication interface; Figure 7 is a bottom view of the communication interface of Figure 6;

Figure 8 is an end view of the communication interface of Figure 6;

Figure 9 is a partial exploded view of the communication interface of Figure 6;

Figure 10 is a plan view of a flexible printed circuit board for the communication interface of Figure 6;

Figure 11 is a plan view of an alternative embodiment of a communication interface; Figure 12 is a view of the communication interface of figure 6 mounted in a cap; Figure 13 is an alternative profile shape for the communication interface of Figure 6; Figure 14 is a further alternative profile shape for the communication interface of Figure 6.

Description of Embodiments

It should be noted in the following description that like or the same reference numerals in different embodiments denote the same or similar features.

Referring to the drawings there is shown the invention according to one form providing apparel with communication apparatus comprising apparel that is wearable on or near the head of a wearer. The apparel with communication apparatus can have the communication interface being substantially self-contained in the apparel. Preferably the apparel is a headgear such as a hat or cap or bandana. Preferably the apparel is a neckgear such as scarf, cravat or tie.

The apparel as shown in Figure 1 is a form of headgear of a hat 15 or can be a cap that is commonly known as a baseball cap due to its prevalence for being baseball spectator merchandise and includes advertising and trade mark logos of baseball teams. Clearly such caps are used in many merchandising of many sports and even many commercial businesses and therefore reference to a cap or baseball cap is not limited to that sporting arena.

Referring to Figure 2 there are the elements of a communication interface 17 for wireless connection to a mobile communication device 16 wherein a wearer of the apparel 15 can use the mobile communication device 16 through use of the communication interface 17. The mobile communication device can be a mobile phone 21 or a notebook 22 or other mobile communication device. As shown in Figure 3 the alternatives of mobile communication devices 16 can include Apple™ iOS™ smartphones, Samsung HTC and other Android™ smartphones, Blackberry™ smartphones and Tablets of various forms that can be using iOS™, Android™ or other mobile communication protocol. Generally the wearer can be transporting such mobile device 16 in a pocket or bag. Therefore usage of the mobile device is undertaken while away from the head of the user and a substantial health benefit is achieved as the multitude of other functions which can be occurring are not occurring while being held to the head of and therefore you are not being subjected to a full spectrum of bandwidth at the high power intensities.

The communication interface is mountable in the apparel being the cap 15 in a discreet manner. In particular the elements of the communication interface 17 are mountable on the inside of the cap 15 in a substantially completely hidden manner when the apparel is worn and the mobile communication device is able to be used in this condition. It is not necessary to remove the cap 15 to operate the communication interface 17. Therefore as the apparel is wearable on the head of the wearer and the communication interface 17 is substantially self-contained in the cap in a substantially hidden mode when worn by the wearer the wearer of the apparel can use the mobile communication device in a discreet manner such that onlookers cannot see its operation.

The communication interface 17 includes: a signal transmitter/receiver 31 for communication to the mobile communication device; audio output 32 for receipt of aural communication from the mobile communication device 17; a voice receiver 33 for detecting verbal communication from the wearer while the apparel is worn; a power storage 34 and connection from external power source and connected to disperse power to one or more of the elements of the communication interface;

Controls 35 which are physical contact controls are included in the communication interface 17 and includes controls that can be activated by the wearer of the apparel without removal of the apparel; and motion detector 36 that can be activated by the wearer of the apparel by movement of the head or upper body of the wearer.

The signal transmitter/receiver 31 uses Bluetooth™ or uses WiFi. This device can use the protocol of the mobile communication device 16 and any of its automatic or hands free instruction protocols.

The communication interface 17 can include audio output 32 located on the headgear 15 near the wearer's ears. This allows for receipt of aural communication from the mobile communication device 17. Preferably this is undertaken by selection of appropriate type and position of earphones or speakers without needing to remove cap to operate. The audio output 32 of the communication interface 17 can engage the skull of the wearer when the apparel is worn and includes bone conduction aural transfer technology. Bone conduction speakers can be used such as used with individuals with normal or impaired hearing.

Bone conduction is the conduction of sound to the inner ear through the bones of the skull. Bone conduction transmission can be a reason why a person voice sounds different to him/her when it is recorded and played back. Because the skull conducts lower frequencies better than air, people perceive their own voices to be lower and fuller than others do, and a recording of one's own voice frequently sounds higher than one expects it to sound. Bone conduction products have the following safety advantages over traditional headphones: Does not block outside sound

Maintains sound clarity in very noise environments

Can be used with hearing protecting

Much safer to eardrum than standard in ear headphones/buds

The communication interface 17 includes a voice receiver 33 for detecting verbal communication from the wearer while the apparel is worn. The communication interface 17 can include voice receiver 33 located on the headgear 15 near the wearer's mouth. This could be in the peak of the cap 15. Due to noise reduction technology and accuracy of voice receiver pickups this can be highly effective even if near but not adjacent the wearer's mouth. However it still has the advantage of being operative while wearing the cap. The communication interface 17 includes a power storage 34 and connection from external power source and connected to disperse power to one or more of the elements of the communication interface. As shown in Figure 3 the apparel with communication apparatus charges from a port located on the right side of the cap within the lining. It uses a very small 5 pin style charger 41 which can be a similar charger to iPhone™ and which allows the area dedicated for the power device to be basically unnoticeable,

Controls 35, which are physical contact controls, are included in the communication interface 17 and the controls 35 can be activated by the wearer of the apparel without removal of the apparel and can be activated by the wearer of the apparel from external of the apparel without removal of the apparel. Built within the baseball cap 15 which forms the apparel with communication apparatus is a small command button which will be located on the right hand side of the cap, again being hidden from human eye, to control the communication apparatus. The buttons presented can include a volume control, split speaker control, and command/pairing mode button. However controls can be received by other detection means. As detailed before that can be voice controls but the communication interface 17 preferably includes motion detector 36 that can be activated by the wearer of the apparel by movement of the head or upper body of the wearer.

The apparel with communication apparatus can have the communication interface being controllable substantially hands free. Preferably the communication interface is controllable at least partially by voice control and/or controllable at least partially by motion control. In one form the communication interface can be controllable at least partially by motion detector in the communication interface which is controllable by the upper body of the wearer of the apparel that is wearable on or near the head of a user. Preferably the communication interface is controllable at least partially by the motion detector detecting predetermined motions of the head the wearer and/or controllable at least partially by the motion detector detecting predetermined motions of the upper body including neck or shoulders of the wearer.

Referring to Figure 4, in use the apparel with communication apparatus can have the communication interface 17 allowing the wearer of the cap 15 to undertake one or more of the following actions: create and answer telephone calls 51 on the mobile device 16 substantially hands free and substantially discreetly. to create and answer SMS communications or emails on the mobile device substantially hands free and substantially discreetly. to undertake searches on the World Wide Web on the mobile device substantially hands free and substantially discreetly. to control and play and listen to music on the mobile device substantially hands free and substantially discreetly. to undertake GPS control and navigation using the mobile device substantially hands free and substantially discreetly.

Referring to Figure 5 there is shown Figure 5 is a diagrammatic view of a further embodiment of apparel with communication apparatus in accordance with the present invention in which the apparel includes a computer processor forming at least part of the communication interface.

It can be seen that the apparel with communication apparatus in one form connects by Bluetooth™ to your smart phone - Create calls, send texts, play music, without ever touching your phone. This apparel with communication apparatus is a baseball cap, which has a slimline Bluetooth™ device and attached speakers embedded into the cap lining. This allows users to connect, control and interact with their smart devices through vocal command. This Bluetooth™ device is hidden from human eye.

The apparel with communication apparatus Bluetooth™ device works by using radio waves instead of wires or cables to connect with your cell phone or smart device. When in close proximity to each other, they connect, or pair. This enables you to start using your mobile phone in conjunction with your apparel with communication apparatus and operate already available features of your chosen connected device.

The number of ways apparel with communication apparatus can be applied in our modern day world is endless. Baseball hats are already frequently worn in many moments of our fast paced lives, by incorporating the technology apparel with communication apparatus provides users it can further enhance these situations and in some cases create additional safety.

All the extended features of your smart device personal assistant (EG: iOS Siri) that are initiated through audio recognition will be compatible with apparel with communication apparatus VI.0. The product can be a weatherproof products made specifically to stand up to outside elements which may damage or affect them such as moisture or heat.

In one preferred embodiment the communication interface can be incorporated integrally with the apparel through the use of so-called e-texiles. Advances in e-textiles allows fabrics and clothing to be woven with integrated electrical circuitry and electrical components. Hence, a cap or other form of apparel can be made entirely, or at least partially, from e-textiles and thereby directly incorporate the communication interface. Alternatively, the communication interface could be formed on a patch of woven e-texile, whereby the patch could be sewn, or otherwise attached, to a cap or other form of apparel.

In an alternative embodiment, the communication interface can be a modular unit 100 which can be removably incorporated into a cap 102 or other form of apparel. In this regard, the apparel includes a pouch or sleeve into which the communication interface can be inserted for use while the apparel is worn. While headwear is only one form of apparel to which the communication interface is suited, it will be appreciated that various other forms of apparel can apply.

One embodiment of the modular unit 100 is shown in Figs. 6-9. As shown, the unit 100 has an elongated shape. The unit 100 comprises a flexible sleeve material 104 within which is housed the electronic components. The sleeve material 104 is preferably a water-resistant material such as silicone. Silicone also presents an additional benefit in being a non-slip material. At each end of the unit 100 are end caps 106a, 106b, preferably formed of rigid material such as plastic. In at least one of the end caps 106a, there are ports to allow electrical access to the internal components. The ports include a charging port 108 to allow connection to an external power source for powering the unit's internal battery. In preferred embodiments, the charging port 108 also acts as a data port to allow exchange of data to and from the unit. Another port may be an audio port 110 to allow connection to headphones. As shown, speakers 112 are arranged on the unit. Ideally the two speakers 112 are positioned at the furthest ends of the unit to maximise stereo potential. At the bottom and centre of the unit is positioned a microphone 116. Additionally, raised control buttons 114 are provided to allow a user manual control. By being raised, the control buttons 114 can be found tactilely through the fabric of the apparel in which the unit 100 is disposed. The controls 114 can provide a number of different functions, for example, volume control, scrolling, selection, power on/off.

Within the unit 100, the electrical components are mounted on a flexible printed circuit board (PCB) 118. Stiffening portions 120 are affixed to one side of the PCB with gaps 122 left between the portions, see Fig. 10. The stiffening portions 120 are positioned to align with the mounted electronic components to resist flexing where the electronic components are mounted which could cause the electronic components to become dislodged from the PCB 118.

As shown, the sleeve 104 is formed with grooves 124. The grooves 124 align with the gaps 122 between the stiffening portions 120 on the PCB 118. The grooves 124 consequently promote positons in which the unit 100 can be flexed and bent. The ability to allow the unit 100 to bend at the grooves 124, allows the unit 100 to be configured to adopt a substantially curved shape in order to be accommodated in different forms of apparel. In a cap 102, as a prime example, the unit 100 needs to be able to adopt a curved shape in accordance with the shape of a user's head, see fig. 12. In a variation, the unit 100 may include a spring bias, such as a leaf spring member, so that the unit 100 is biased into a curved configuration.

To further promote comfort, the sleeve 104 could be formed with different profile shapes. Examples, of substantially curved profiles are shown in Figs. 13 and 14. Hence, while the unit 100 can be configured to accommodate a head's circumference, the curved profile can neatly sit the unit 100 against the user's forehead and sides of the head.

In exemplary embodiments, the unit 100 could include additional data connection ports to allow connection to other devices. In the case of a cap mounted unit, additional devices may be a head-mounted camera or virtual reality glasses, for example. Where the unit 100 includes processing power and memory, by connecting to such devices, the unit 100 can provide all the processing and control for the other devices. Potentially, the unit 100 could communicate wirelessly with the additional devices to, again, provide the processing power. Alternatively, the unit 100 could act as a communication relay or router between the additional devices and the mobile communication device; in which case the mobile communication device could provide the processing power and the unit is simply acting as an intermediary in the data communication. In the case of the foregoing examples, the unit 100 can act as a remote control device for external devices. Interpretation
