Description:
DESCRIPTION

WHIP SYSTEM FOR MEASURING HITTING ENERGY This invention is about the discovery of measuring hitting energy of the whip used by the horse riders during a race or training, in order to determine if the use of the whip is against the relevant rules as to hurt the horses during the races.

During the horse races, the jockeys use the whip in order to direct the horses or force them to run faster. Even though there are several restrictions introduced for the jockeys to limit the number and severity of using their whips, it is likely for the jockeys to use their whips excessively consciously or unconsciously as a result of their ambitions, etc. during the race. As a result, the horses are abused excessively. As, existing inspection methods does not include such an observation or a technology today, it isn't possible to determine the number and severity of the usage of the whip during the races. Consequently, hurting the horses does not generate any responsibility ending up penalties to the riders (the jockey, apprentice). With respect to the same purpose, there is a patent application No. GB 2499908 A, however, it proposes counting the number of hitting to the horse, rather than measuring the hitting energy. Patent No. GB 2499908 A uses only one sensor. The sensor is described as measuring either acceleration or speed or force. The number of hitting is determined by using one of these sensors. Meanwhile, it cannot be determined by the contemporary whips, whether the jockeys raise it above their head levels. It is again banned to hit the whip at the neck of the horse. Once again, it isn't possible to determine whether the whip is hit onto the neck of the horse or not. On the other hand, with the product of invention in subject, it is possible to determine the position, speed, motion and kinetic energy of the whip, using three sensors; gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetometer combination installed in the whip. By making use of the technique of the invention, the sensors record the energy of hitting during the race, determines the hitting that hurts the horse and informs the stewards. By this way, it is possible to determine whether the riders follow the rules. The invention also contributes to the performance of the horse races in an 5 equitable manner by ensuring the riders to compete with each other under the same racing conditions. Furthermore, it will be possible to implement existing dissuasive penalties subject to the riders using the whip (the jockey, apprentice) in an unauthorized manner.

] o There is a rule for banning the jockey to hit the horse to the neck with a whip during race. To sense any such hitting, a magnetic tag or magnet is incorporated to the headgear. Magnetometer sensor (11) in the whip senses the variation of the magnetic field near the horse's neck in case of hitting (Figure-3). is As an alternative method for magnetometer sensor is the use of Ultra High Frequency (UHF) Tag (an electronic tag) as incorporated to the headgear. UHF reader in the whip is sensing whenever the whip is brought close to the horse's neck and thus hitting the horse's neck is determined. 0 During horse races, the jockeys aren't allowed to raise their whips beyond their head levels. Gyroscope and Magnetometer embedded in the body of the whip sense and record the height and angle of the whip raised above to the ground via accelerometer sensors as interpreted by algorithm software in the microprocessor. 5 Gyroscope and magnetometer sensors in the whip body, in addition to accelerometer sensor are also used to detect the movements and hitting energy of the whip. Microprocessor interprets the data coming from these sensors and detects the hitting energy generated by the jockey during the whip hitting

30 It isn't the force applied or the number of hitting that generates the physical impact hurting the horse. The cause that hurts the horse is the Energy generated by the whip. The difference between this invention and GB 2499908 A is; rather than only counting the number of hitting applied, the invention is measuring the energy of the hitting, exclusively hurting the horse. The pain is directly related to the kinetic energy generated by the whip's move when it hits the horse. However, only the force of an arm pressing the horse's body is not enough to hurt the horse without any momentum.

Assuming that the whip makes circular motion during hitting by the jockey, the amount of the energy at the time of hitting can be expressed as follows:

E: Kinetic Energy of Whip

I: Moment of Inertia of Whip

L: Length of Whip

M: Mass of Whip

w: Angular velocity of the whip during swing

1 ,

E = -Iw 2

1 .

Moment of Inertia of Whip Rotating from One End: / = - Mir The energy can be expressed as follows : E = ~ ML 2 w 2

By the help of Gyroscope embedded in the whip, w (angular velocity) is measured and kinetic energy of the whip is recorded.

The invention is consisted of Whip (1) complete with Electronic Board (2) embedded in the whip together with Accelerometer Sensor (3), Magnetometer Sensor (4), Gyroscope Sensor (5) and Microprocessor (6). The sensing assembly consisted of these sensors (chips) sensing the movement of Whip (1 ) during its use. Microprocessor (6) issues the data sent by these sensors (chips), and calculates the energy transferred to the horse by Whip (1), also, the record is kept in the Microprocessor (6) for each hit.

The energy ensuring the application of Whip (1) is supplied by Battery (7) embedded into Whip (1).

The information recorded during the horse race into Microprocessor Chip (6) is transferred into NFC chip (8) located on Electronic Board (2) of the invention and this information can be downloaded into a mobile phone with NFC reading feature of the invention. Furthermore, it is possible to transfer data to the steward's computer at the end of the race by using NFC chip (8) and NFC antenna (9). With the RFID chip (10) embedded in Whip (1), it is possible to determine the user of the whip. Horse racing authorities determine the weight, size and other standards of the whip in line with local rules in a respective country. Whip will be defined and again the jockey will be allowed to take part in racing with the same whip thanks to the signals issued via RFID antenna (11) embedded in the whip. By this way, during the race, the jockey will be prevented from the use of the whip that fails to fulfill the rules of the horse race.

The method of the invention involves the installation of small and effective magnetic tag or Magnet (12) installed at the neck area of the horse (on the headgear and part of the neck via suitable stickers, etc.) in order to determine whether the neck of the horse is ever hit. Again, magnetometer sensor (11) embedded in Whip (1) will sense the change in the magnetic field of Magnet (12) installed at the horse's headgear and thus the determination of any hit on the horse's neck. The invention also involves the capability of installing UHF Tag (13) (i.e., an electronic tag) at the horse's neck as an optional feature instead of magnet (12). Once again, the determination is made by UHF TAG (13) for bringing Whip (1) close to the horse's neck thanks to UHF TAG (14) embedded in the whip and thus the hit on the horse's neck is determined.
