Abstract:
[Problem] To enhance the efficiency of obtaining white light from an optical waveguide and to prevent color unevenness of the obtained white light in an element for obtaining white light by introducing excitation light into the optical waveguide and emitting the excitation light and fluorescence. [Solution] A white-light generation element according to the present invention is provided with a fluorescent body that uses, as excitation light, laser light having a wavelength of 280-495 nm inclusive, that generates white light, and that generates fluorescence having a wavelength larger than the wavelength of the excitation light. The fluorescent body has an emission-side end surface for emitting excitation light and fluorescence, an opposed end surface on the opposite side from the emission-side end surface, and an outer perimetral surface. The area of the emission-side end surface is larger than the area of the opposed end surface. The outer perimetral surface of the fluorescent body includes a tilted portion, along the entire perimeter of the fluorescent body, that is tilted by 3.4-23° inclusive relative to the central axis of the fluorescent body. The area of the emission-side end surface is 0.3-1.52 mm2 inclusive.
