This wireless communication system is configured such that a plurality of ground stations, which perform wireless communication with a mobile station, are present therein. The mobile station: measures the communication quality of radio waves transmitted constantly from peripheral ground stations; selects a plurality of handover-candidate ground stations on the basis of the measurement results; performs radio resource reservation in which wireless communication channels are reserved for the respective selected handover-candidate ground stations; and performs handover to one ground station among the ground stations for which the radio resource reservation has been performed, on the basis of the comparison between the communication quality of radio waves transmitted from the ground stations for which the radio resource reservation has been performed by the mobile station, and the communication quality of a radio wave transmitted from a ground station being in communication with the mobile station. The radio resource reservation is performed every time the selection of the handover-candidate ground station is changed by the mobile station, and can be performed for unlimited number of times prior to a handover.
