Provided are a work vehicle and a method for controlling the work vehicle which make it possible to exhibit a braking ability equivalent to that of a conventional torque-converter work vehicle, when an operator switches between forward travel and reverse travel using an HMT or EMT power transmission device. A control unit provided in this work vehicle has a clutch control unit and a motor control unit. When a first clutch is engaged and a second clutch is disengaged, the clutch control unit disengages the first clutch when the vehicle speed is within a pre-set first range and when the first direction of travel indicated by the operator and inputted from an FR operation device differs from the second direction of travel determined on the basis of the vehicle speed detected by a vehicle-speed detection unit. The motor control unit controls the motor so as to decrease the relative rotation speed of the second clutch after disengaging the first clutch.
