Disclosed is a zoom lens comprising: a first variable refractive power element in which, when zooming from a wide-angle end to a telescopic end, refractive power is changed in the positive direction by changing the shape of the boundary surface between different media; and a second variable refractive power element in which, when zooming from the wide-angle end to the telescopic end, refractive power is changed in the negative direction by changing the shape of the boundary surface between different media. The image formation magnification factor of at least one variable refractive power element is increased when zooming from the wide-angle end to the telescopic end. The refractive power change amount (Δφ1i) of the media of the first variable refractive power element and the Abbe number (ν1i) of the media of the first variable refractive power element in the zooming operation from the wide-angle end to the telescopic end, and the refractive power change amount (Δφ2i) of the media of the second variable refractive power element and the Abbe number (ν2i) of the media of the second variable refractive power element in the zooming operation from the wide-angle end to the telescopic end satisfy the conditional expression -0.0150<{Σ(Δφ1i/ν1i)+Σ(Δφ2i/ν2i)}•ft<0.0075 with respect to the focal distance (ft) of the entire system at the telescopic end.
