[Problem] To provide a zoom lens having a high variable magnification ratio, a compact size, and high performance. [Solution] The zoom lens comprises, in order starting from the object side, a positive first lens group (1G), a negative second lens group (2G), a positive third lens group (3G), a positive fourth lens group (4G), and a negative fifth lens group (5G). When magnification is changed from the wide-angle end to the telephoto end, the interval (δ12) between the first and second lens groups (1G, 2G) constantly increases, the interval (δ23) between the second and third lens groups (2G, 3G) constantly decreases, the interval (δ34) between the third and fourth lens groups (3G, 4G) constantly decreases, the interval (δ45) between the fourth and fifth lens groups (4G, 5G) changes, and all of the lens groups move in relation to the imaging position. The conditional expressions (J): 0.50 < fw / f4 < 0.65 and (K): -0.32 < fw / f5 < -0.15 are simultaneously satisfied, where fw represents the focal distance of the entire lens system at the wide-angle end, f4 represents the focal distance of the fourth lens group (4G), and f5 represents the focal distance of the fifth lens group (5G).
