To provide a fault diagnosis method which allows an abnormality to be easily located in the case of the occurrence of a fault (the abnormality) in a communication network.
The resistance value of a CAN bus main line 4 is 60Ω when the CAN bus main line 4 is normal, but the resistance value of he CAN bus main line 4 is varied in accordance with an abnormal position in the case that the abnormality like disconnection or short-circuit occurs in the CAB bus main line 4 or a branch line 5. so that the abnormality can be specified in accordance with the measured resistance value. A fault diagnosis function of an ECU 3 stores different abnormality codes for the occurrence of an abnormality in CAN bus communication, the occurrence of a fault in various sensors 1 and 2, and the occurrence of an abnormality like disconnection in communication lines connected various sensors 1 and 2 respectively in a memory. Thus the resistance value of the CAN bus main line 4 is measured, and the abnormality is specified by combining the resistance value and abnormality codes stored in the ECU 3.
