Abstract:
A substantially homogeneous composite material comprises a matrix material, preferably aluminium, and a number of deagglomerated silicon carbide whiskers substantially homogeneously and uniformly dispersed and distributed throughout the matrix to reinforce the matrix. The composite may be prepared by slurrying silicon carbide with a polar solvent and mixing with, preferably, aluminium powder. Residual solvent is distilled off to leave a dry composite. The composition may be formed into a billet, which can be extruded, forged or machined.
