To provide an agent for dyeing fibers (especially keratin fibers), containing the combination of a developer with a coupling substance as a main agent, characterized by containing a 2-aminoalkyl-1,4-diaminobenzene derivative as the developer, and to provide a new 2-aminoalkyl-l,4-diaminobenzene derivative.

A 2-aminoalkyl-1,4-diaminobenzene derivative of the general formula (I) or a physiologically mild water-soluble salt thereof, concretely, for example, 2-ethylaminomethyl-1,4-dimino-benzene hydrochloride. The agent for the oxidative dyeing of the fibers contains the compound.
