Abstract:

PURPOSE: To conduct with higher precision the optimumization of air-fuel ratio in a case in which air-fuel ratio control is being conducted by means of catalyst upstream and downstream oxygen sensors, by constituting a ternary catalyst in multi-steps, providing a middle oxygen sensor at an opening between respective catalysts, and utilizing its output.

CONSTITUTION: This ternary catalyst 30 provided at an exhaust passage 9 is constituted in multi-steps, and an opening 33 is formed between the 1st step and the 2nd step catalysts 31, 32, and a middle oxygen sensor 13 is provided at this opening 33, and at the same time a main oxygen sensor 11 and a sub- oxygen sensor 12 are provided as before on the front (upstream) side and the rear (downstream) side of the ternary catalyst 30. And the middle oxygen sensor 13 outputting a clear response corrugation form, together with the sub sensor 12 outputting an unclear response corrugation form, is connected to a distortion measurement portion, and the detection of response distortion is accurately conducted from the output of both sensors 12, 13, and the controllability of air-fuel ratio control is improved by conducting such control as removes this distortion.
