Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound comprising a specific aluminum sulfonate compound, causing no alcoholysis in a reaction using an alcohol as a raw material, useful as a catalyst for forming esters, acetals, ketals, olefins, ethers, etc.
SOLUTION: This new aluminum compound is shown by the formula [R' is a (substituted) hydrocarbon; R2 is O, Cl, a (substituted) hydrocarbon or a (substituted) hydrocarbonoxy group; (m) is 1-3; (n) is 0-2; m+n is 3], causes no alcoholysis in a reaction using an alcohol as a raw material, has sufficient activity and is useful for producing esters, acetals, ketals, olefins and ethers as a Lewis catalyst slight in side reactions. The compound is obtained by reacting a trialkylaluminum or an aluminum trialkoxide [e.g. aluminum triisopropoxide] with a sulfonic acid (e.g. p-phenolsulfonic acid) in a solvent such as toluene by heating under reflux.
