Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound having high compatibility with a number of known antiferroelectric liquid crystal compounds, giving a liquid crystal material having improved temperature characteristics and, accordingly, useful as a material for an electrooptical element produced by using an antiferroelectric liquid crystal material.
CONSTITUTION: This compound is expressed by formula I (R1 is a 6-16C alkyl; R2 is a 3-8C straight-chain alkyl or a 4-10C branched alkyl; * represents an asymmetric carbon atom), e.g. 2-(4-(S)-2-methyloctanoyloxyphenyl)-5- decyloxycarbonyloxy-1,3-pyrimidine. The compound can be produced e.g. by converting an optically active 2-methylalkanoic acid into a carboxylic acid halide of formula II by conventional method and reacting the obtained compound of formula II with a phenol derivative of formula III in the presence of pyridine. The 2-methylalkanoic acid used as a raw material is produced e.g. by the asymmetric hydrogenation of a 2-methyl-2-alkanoic acid. The compound of formula III is produced e.g. from 2-(4-benzyloxyphenyl)-5-hydroxy-1,3-pyrimidine.
