Automatic connection by a first mode giving priority to shortening of connection time and automatic connection by a second mode giving priority to a connection success rate are selected and done by distinguishing adhesion connection and aerial connection corresponding to form of automatic connection and setting them. At the first mode, when a guide pipe lowers and the wire electrode is fed, operation of both of them is adjusted in advance so as to feed the wire electrode even if the wire electrode is not clamped. Since operation of related devices is omitted and these devices can be simultaneously operated, automatic connection time can be shortened. Moreover, automatic connection time can be shortened by starting the rise of the guide pipe when insertion succeeds at the first mode. At the second mode, secure connection operation is done by aerial connection.
