To provide a chipper which can enhance the cutting efficiency of a material to be cut and also can cut the material to the size which facilitates its composting.
A platen 60 for mounting a rotary blade of the chipper 10 has a plurality of free hammers 70 and long rotary blades 50 alternately arranged at an interval of 90°. The free hammers 70 are supported in a freely rotatable manner in the axial direction of a supporting shaft 72. In addition, a long fixed blade 48 is arranged at a cutting position of the material 20. When the platen 60 rotates, first the end 20A of the material 20 is shredded by a battering action of the free hammers 70. In succession, the end 20A of the material 20 caught in the gap between the free hammers 70 and not shredded, and the shredded branch end, are ruptured, so that the positive rupturing of the material 20 is ensured and the cutting efficiency can be increased. Besides, the branch end of the material 20 is further ruptured by the rotary blade 50 and thus the shredding of the branch end is achieved. Consequently, the shreds can be easily composted.
