Abstract:

PURPOSE: In the recovery of hydrochloric acid produced, as a by-product in the production of bisphenol A using hydrogen chloride as a catalyst, the hydrochloric acid separated from the reaction mixture is extracted with phenol to remove acetone and other substances to prevent the hydrochloric acid recovery unit from being clogged.

CONSTITUTION: When bisphenol A is produced from phenol and acetone using hydrogen chloride as a catalyst and the hydrochloric acid formed as a byproduct during the reaction is recovered, phenol 14 is added to the hydrochloric acid 12 separated from the reaction mixture 1, then the mixture is separated into the phenol phase 18 and the hydrochloric acid phase 19 to extract the acetone and bisphenol A contained in the hydrochloric acid 12 into the phenol phase to prevent the formation of bisphenol A in the hydrochloric acid recovery unit 21 and consequently, the formation of its molecular compound with phenol to prevent the equipment and piping from being clogged. Further, the loss in steam and labor needed for the conventional prevention of clogging can be saved and damages to equipment is reduced.
