To provide coated microparticles improved in at least one property selected from among color, gloss, luminescence (fluorescence or phosphorescence), luminance, light reflection, and ultraviolet shielding.
The coated microparticles are ones prepared by rotating a vacuum container 1 the inside of which is polygonal in a cross section about a rotation axis being the direction substantially perpendicular to the cross section to sputter microparticles 3 under agitation or rotation in the container 3 to thereby surface-coat the microparticles 3 with ultramicroparticles or having a smaller particle diameter than the microparticles or with a thin film thereof, wherein the ultramicroparticles or the thin film comprises one member selected from the group consisting of a metal, an oxide, a nitride, and a carbide or comprises a composite of at least two members selected from the above group and characterized by being capable of being used in cosmetics or coating materials.
