PURPOSE: To set the temperature of a hot plate in a fixed range lower than the saturation temperature of steam by providing a detector for detecting the temperature on the hot plate, providing a solenoid stop valve in a steam supply path to the hot plate and controlling the solenoid stop valve based on the detection signals of the detector.

CONSTITUTION: The collar and cuffs of a shirt are brought into press contact between ironing bases 5 and 6 and the hot plate 8 whose heat source is the steam, and press-finished. Then, the hot plate 8 is provided with the detector 17 for detecting the temperature, the solenoid stop valve 14 is disposed to the steam supply path 13 to the hot plate 8 and the solenoid stop valve 14 is controlled based on the detection signals of the detector 17. As a result, the temperature of the hot plate is set in the fixed range lower than the saturation temperature of the steam and stable pressing work is executed at all times.
