To provide the combustion control device of an internal combustion engine which can expand the operation range by a compression self-ignition combustion to a high load side and low load side.
ECU 1 calculates a request load T and engine speed N, based on an accelerator opening signal and crank angle sensor signal and determines it as a spark ignition combustion or self ignition combustion by a combustion pattern determining part 2 based thereon. When the self-ignition combustion is judged, a self-ignition combustion control part 4 selects a first 4 stroke cycle operation consisting of respective strokes such as suction, compression, expansion and exhaust and a second 4 stroke cycle operation consisting of respective strokes such as the suction compression, expansion, compression and expansion exhaust and a cycle switch control part 5 controls a variable valve timing mechanism 19 and realizes the suction exhaust valve timing for the first/second 4 stroke cycles. At the second 4 stroke cycle, the first combustion is rendered as the spark ignition combustion, and the second combustion is rendered as the self ignition combustion.
