Abstract:

To smoothly sift from normal combustion to self-ignition combustion and eliminate problems such as deterioration of fuel consumption and an ignition plug itself by executing proper ignition timing and ignition stop control based on parameters in relation to combustion speed.

In this gasoline engine, new air in a combustion chamber is burnt by self-ignition. In this case, the engine includes a parameter sensing means in relation to combustion speed, for example, in respect to insulation resistance for an ignition plug. and an ignition control means which gradually retards an ignition timing due to the ignition plug when the value sensed by the sensing means reaches a value in relation to the combustion speed at the time of self-ignition, and suspends ignition by the ignition plug when the ignition timing reaches a constant value.
