Abstract:

To solve the problem wherein a continuously variable transmission having an improved axial load generating system is required for changing force produced as the function of a speed transmission ratio.

The combination of an infinite number of speeds is provided over the transmission ratio range of a variable speed transmission having a plurality of inclined balls 1, and opposed discs of an input 34 and an output 101. When using a planetary gear device, a minimum speed can be reversed and the unique geometrical shape of the transmission makes all power passages coaxial. As a result, compared with a transmission which achieves a similar transmission ratio range, the transmission has reduced total size and complexity. A coating having a useful effect of increasing a friction coefficient on the surface of a rotating element can reduce axial force required for selective torque to improve the efficiency and life of the transmission. A variable friction coefficient reduces the amount of axial force required for transmitting maximum torque to increase the maximum toque base angle of the transmission.
