Abstract:

To improve the combustion performance in starting an engine in the multicylinder spark ignition-type engine.

A flow passage switching means is mounted to switch intake and exhaust flow passages, and air-fuel ratio control means 43, 44 are mounted to control the combustion in a special operation mode performing the combustion in a lean state where an air-fuel ratio is larger than a theoretical air-fuel ratio by injecting the fuel into cylinders of advanced cylinders 2A, 2D, and supplying the burned gas of the lean air-fuel ratio led out to trailing cylinders 2B, 2C from the advanced cylinders 2A, 2D, and the fuel to adjust the air-fuel ratio in the cylinder to a value approximately corresponding to the theoretical air-fuel ratio, in the operation of low load and low rotation. In starting the engine, two cylinders are connected by the flow passage switching means to allow the trailing cylinders 2B, 2C to burn by thinning the combustion of the advanced cylinders 2A, 2D in the first combustion control.
